A well known rule at the Oscars is that an actor can only be nominated for one performance per year in a category.

This year, Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett are subject to this rule, despite rave reviews for both performances for each actor. So what if this rule ceased to exist?

Who could have been a double nominee in the same categories at Oscars past? And is their anyone else who would have stood a great chance at achieving the feat in this upcoming season?

    I love this topic!
This year Blanchett would have the best chance to achieve that, but in the past:

Kate Winslet – The Reader, Revolutionary Road
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Departed, Blood Diamond
Patricia Clarkson – Pieces of April, The Station Agent
Sean Penn – 21 Grams, Mystic River
Jessica Chastain – The Help, Tree of Life
Nicole Kidman – The Others, Moulin Rouge
Geoffrey Rush – Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth
Anthony Hopkins – Reamins of the Day, Shadowlands
Miranda Richardson – Damage, The Crying Game

I agree with the ones that have already been mentioned.

    Two other possibilities:

2001: Jim Broadbent – Iris & Moulin Rouge

2002: Meryl Streep – Adaptation. & The Hours (only maybe, a bit difficult because of the question if she’s lead or supporting)

This year Alicia Vikander has a healthily number of projects to consider. The Danish Girl, Ex Machina, and Testament of Youth being the main contenders. Testament is the only clear lead but Danish Girl is being called out as a lead by the Toronto crowd saying it would be ridiculous if she went supporting. She could go either way for Ex Machina. I could make a case for both lead or supporting. Testament probably won’t be a player nor will Machina be but who knows.
