Two time Best Actor winner Spencer Tracy died of heart failure 17 days after completing filming of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, a contemporary comedy for which he received his ninth Oscar nomination.

If the 67 year old Tracy has survived for another five years, in which nominated role do you think he would have most likely been cast after playing the liberal San Francisco newspaper publisher Matt Drayton who struggles with his daughter’s intention to marry a noted African America physician?

It’s hard to see him in a few of these roles, especially True Grit, The Godfather or even Sleuth. I think that a similarity in acting style makes The Hospital the most logical choice, though I could also have seen Patton for the same reason.

Tracy would have been great in “I Never Sang for My Father” (not taking anything away from Melvyn Douglas’s fine work there). This might not count since he was technically living at the time, but I think Tracy could have wowed an entirely new set of fans in Steiger’s role in against-type “In the Heat of the Night.”

I can see him in every one of those roles.

I dont recall him ever playing the kind of intense crazy as Andrew Wyke, taking nothing away from the late great Sir Laurence Olivier, but if anyone could do it, it’s him.

The other ‘against type’ role is Rooster Cogburn. But, I can see him doing it in fine, Tracy fashion.

Same with Cardinal Wolsey. Put on some “packing”, don a flowing red robe and sweat a lot, and voila.

I enthusiastically agree. As I was looking at the nominations from that five year period, I could easily see Tracy playing any of the ten identified roles with great finesse and ease. God, what an actor! And any of those films, in my opinion, would have better for his participation.
