I have thought about this for sometime. Do you think the winners would be the same if Academy voters could only vote during Phase 2 for their own branch? I personally think the choices would reflect less of a consensus. I suspect the Directors branch would probably reward Director to a different person than the Academy as a whole would more often. A few examples of what may have happened: Fincher for The Social Network, Michael Keaton for Birdman, PSH for The Master, etc…

    Thoughts?

If it were up to the branches, I’m sure that there would have been at least a few changes.

For one thing, Roger Deakins would have an Oscar by now.

Viola Davis might have won best actress.
Ang Lee might have won director for CTHD.
Terrence Malick might have won adapted screenplay for TTRL.
Robert Altman might have won director and screenplay for Gosford Park.
Denzel Washington might have won for The Hurricane.

Voters are pretty much sold by the persuasion of the campaigns, so most results wouldn’t change, except in some of the tech categories

Restricting voters to thekf branches could possibly influence random winners similar to Emmy winners. Campaigning would heavily influence the nominees but for many of the smaller branches (especially the directors branch) surprise winners could pop up since each individual vote is worth a lot more. Although I do think campaigns would still influence the actors branch and obviously best picture
