With American Sniper coming out on Christmas, I’ve been thinking about the 2005 Oscars. If Million Dollar Baby wasn’t ready to be released that December, what would have won? Would Jim Carrey have gotten a nomination for Eternal Sunshine? Or Paul Giamatti? Could Leo have gotten his Oscar in an Aviator sweep? Would Kate Winslet get her win a nomination earlier? Would Scorsese still have won for the Departed?

    What do you all think?

Tyler, why do you think Giamatti would’ve won? I’m pretty sure he’d replace Eastwood, but Foxx would still win.

I think we would’ve seen a split this year with Sideways taking picture and The Aviator taking director. Church or Foxx would’ve taken supporting actor. If Foxx took supporting I could see DiCaprio or Giamatti taking actor. I think Mean Girls (which was WGA nominated) would’ve gotten into adap screenplay.

If there was no Million Dollar Baby, I could have seen Eternal Sunshine taking its spot. Either Paul Giamatti or Jim Carrey definitely would’ve taken Eastwood’s spot in acting. Martin Scorsese probably would’ve won BD. Kate Winslet or Annette Bening would’ve won Best Actress and in terms of who would’ve been in Swank’s place, I would imagine that it would’ve been either Uma Thurman for Kill Bill or Nicole Kidman for Birth.

Call me biased, but I don’t feel that Jamie Foxx deserved that Oscar. He was good, no doubt about it, but I wouldn’t call him Oscarworthy in Ray (plus he to me doesn’t seem like an Oscar winner).

Foxx was never going to loose that Oscar, please…

Church deserved that Oscar and with Freeman out of the way, it would’ve been his.

I don’t know who could’ve won Best Actress. Logic says Annette Bening but I doubt anybody saw that film (or remembers it today). So maybe Staunton (my choice) or Winslet. I also think Thurman would’ve been nominated in Swank’s place.

With no M$B, I wonder if that may have opened the door for a great animated film, such as The Incredibles? It did win Sound Editing and Animated Film afterall. And perhaps a spot for the terrific Brad Bird for Direction?

Or, if The Passion of The Christ may have found a spot for BP?

    Id say…

    • Best Picture: The Aviator (Really good movie)
    • Best Director: Scorsese (great job imo although I am not his biggest fan)
    • Best Actor: Jamie Foxx (No one was coming near him.) Jim Carey would have been nominated
    • Best Actress: Stauton (Outstanding performance and much better than Kate’s overrated performance)
    • Best Sup. Actor: Church (pretty Obvious)
    • Best Sup. Actress: Blanchet (Pretty Obvious)

I’m surprised no one is predicting Clive Owen to win. He won the Globe and Bafta, so he definitely had some industry support. Church did win the Critics Choice, so it probably would have been close.

I doubt the unknown Staunton could have taken it. It would have been a fight between the multi-nominated Bening and Winslet.

Interesting to think what would have happened if Winslet won:

Then Streep would  have won for  Doubt in 2008, and Viola Davis For The Help in 2011.

We would have finally Shirley Booth redux and Imelda Staunton would have rightfully won. I believe she was close second after Swank. She had lots of industry support just because of her performance. I even remember ScarJo saying if she somehow would have won that GG she would have given it right away to Staunton.

Hathaway was just as strong as Meryl Streep in that year.
