Switch Moneyball for The Help and Beasts for Les Miserables (unfortunately on both counts) and I think the post above is right on the money.

One would assume that the 5 nominees would be those getting DIRECTING  nomination too, but that wasn’t true even when there actually were only 5 nominees, so:

    • In 2009 I could have totally seen the 5 directors matching the BP line up.
    • In 2010, the Academy would have still gone for ‘127 Hours’ instead of Best Directing nominated ‘Black Swan’.
    • In 2011, they would still have gone for ‘The Help’ in BP instead of Best Directing nominated ‘The Tree of Life’.
    • In 2012, I think the Best Director line up would have matched 3/5 the Best Picture nominees, leaving Bigelow and Affleck out to include Haneke and Zeitlin.

I really don’t think Les Mis would break into the BP race if it only had 5 nominees, and rightfully so. I could see:

    Argo
    Lincoln
    Silver Linings Playbook
    Life of Pi
    Zero Dark Thirty

Alt: Amour or Beasts of Southern Wild

Why so many people think Les Mis would’ve been nominated in a year of five? Do not let the number of nominations fool you. “Les Mis” was snubbed in four key categories: Directing, Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography. When does it ever happen in modern day Oscar of a film in a year of five getting in BP without any of those? “Les Miserables” would’ve been this year’s “Dreamgirls”.

    My hunch is:

    Argo
    Lincoln
    Silver Linings Playbook
    Life Of Pi
    Zero Dark Thirty

I don’t believe Amour would have got BP. Remember “City Of God”? 4 big nominations, no BP. I think it would be a similar case.

Beasts is trickier because of the whole ineligibility in guilds thing to say where it would stand. But it would probably be close.

But thing is, if you look where the films got nominated, instead of how many nominations they had, it’s clear that even Django stood a better chance than Les Mis. In fact, Les Mis is probably the only one of the 9 that wouldn’t have been that compeititve for a BP nom.

    I’d go with

    2012

    Argo
    Life of Pi
    Lincoln
    SIlver Linings Playbook
    Zero Dark Thirty

    The Artist
    The Descendants
    Hugo
    Midnight in Paris
    Moneyball

    2010

    Black Swan

    The King’s Speech
    The Social Network

    My best guesses:

    2009

    “Avatar”
    “The Hurt Locker”
    “Inglourious Basterds”
    “Precious”
    “Up in the Air”

The other five films probably didn’t have a chance.

    2010

Definitely “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network”

Probably “True Grit” and “The Fighter”

After that, either “Inception” or “Black Swan.” Probably “Black Swan”

    2011

Definitely “The Artist” and “The Descendants”

Probably “Hugo” and “Midnight in Paris”

Last slot would be either “Moneyball” or “The Help.”  Given the writing, directing, and editing snubs for “The Help,” “Moneyball” probably has the edge between the two.

    2012

Definitely “Lincoln,” “Life of Pi.” and “Silver Linings Playbook”

    Probably “Argo”

Last slot between “Beasts,” “Les Mis,” “Zero Dark,” and “Django.” Really could have gone to any one of those, but I’d give the edge to “Beasts,” then “Zero Dark.”
