Based on the “if you could recast a film character” page.

I’d have someone else direct Argo (lol). Somebody with an actual brain. NOT Bigelow, who does have (a right-wing) brain. Hmmm…Clooney, Cronenberg, Villeneuve, Greengrass, and dozens of other possibilities.

David Lynch instead of Taylor Hackford for Dolores Claiborne. With the identical cast and shooting locations.

Uh, I’ve watched Bigelow interviews and I would not say she has a right-wing brain. Argo would not be a film that interests her, not in the slightest. I also think James Cameron is similar—sometimes they take conservative-rooted approaches, using military subjects and drawing upon conservative ideology, but are liberals themselves.

She’s a liberal, never been any question about that except from those engaging in smear campaigns. She’s not simple minded but understands the complexity of issues. That threatens some people, including some of my fellow liberals sadly.

We’d all be surprised at who among our favorite directors might have different beliefs politically. It wouldn’t surprise me if James Cameron or Ridley Scott were much more conservative than we might think to name two.  I wondered for a long time about Martin Scorsese (he has contributed to some Dems). Sam Raimi is a Republican, was a Bush 2004 contributor. David Mamet has gone off the deep end conservativelty. One of the Zucker brothers is a big right-winger.

Just found a list from the UK Telegraph (a right wing newspaper) – among the films they listed as the “best conservative films of the modern era” are:

    Black Hawk Down
    The King’s Speech
    Gladiator
    United 93
    The Dark Knight
The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Tom Hooper is the only director among them I suspect of being conservative (though not sure about Christopher Nolan).

But any artist about whose politics is certain is usually not a very good artist. If I were to judge directors by their politics, I might like Michael Moore, Mike Leigh or Ken Loach far more than I do, and like a lot of directors I admire – like Clint Eastwood – much less.

If I were an artist (director or actor), I would not want my political beliefs to be known for reasons similar to what you mention.  I realize that sometimes the questions are unavoidable, but it’s often more negative than positive when a well-known figure’s beliefs are out there, be they political or opinions on art and the competition, as they can influence others as well as rub people the wrong way.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Cameron has very liberal leanings. I’d have to disagree about Bigelow. She and the Industrial Military Complex can go have lunch together while they discuss their next film collaboration.

I’ll also say this. If it had not been for Bigelow’s connection with Cameron, her directorial career may have taken a far longer time to reach anybody. Her films are peopled with Cameron connections and cronies.

I’d give Bigelow another chance maybe, depending on how her latest film presents itself. After all, I was a big fan of hers for a very long time. I still think she has directed the best Vampire film I’ve ever seen. She’s also attached to a talented writer and her films are generally well crafted.

Shame on the Academy for playing “I am Woman Hear Me Roar” when she accepted her Oscars.

Kathryn Bigelow never once played the “I am woman hear me roar” card.

Anyone else ever hear anything like that?

    Never happened.

She is in the middle of making a trilogy in which she shows how 9/11 and the American reaction to it badly hurt this country, maybe permnanently. Maybe that will be clearer to those who can’t appreciate subtlety and lack of absolute heroes and villains in narrative art.

Was it just ZDT that irritated you, or Hurt Locker too?  I think she would have made a very different film if she was advancing the agenda of the military industrial complex.  I too was eager to see if she would tackle a different type of film, but I see her next film as completing a trilogy on a specific subject and that excites me.  Actually it seems like it will be a very appropriate trilogy capper–I have to read the book.  Still no word on whether Boal’s onboard, right?

Yes, Cameron clearly had a huge impact on her early films, and she has gone on record speaking about how influential Terminator was to her.  I’d be interested if she’s ever spoken on Titanic.  She’s basically taken the place of Oliver Stone, who’s really missed the boat in the post-9/11 era for producing the type of movies that made him a big deal.  Yeah, the decision to play that song was embarassing.  It probably didn’t even phase Bigelow…wasn’t she the one who said it was an honor to Streisand rather than the other way around?  I appreciate how humble she is, though some people have criticized her for being anti-feminist (not recognizing the significance of her Oscar win in her speech) and for surrounding herself with men.

I saw The Hurt Locker the day it was released, when it was tanking at the B.O.. Very few of us here had seen it at this point. I gave it an A, because I felt it was a highly elegant film so to speak. But, I’d be lying if I said I didnt do a double take afterwards. I dismissed it as an anomaly. But then she follows up with ZD30, a film which alterately put me to sleep and which also infuriated me.

I saw a touch of this in Blue Steel, but dismissed this as well.

Bigelow was ‘shaking’ at the Oscars, when she left the stage with that offensive, dumbed down music. That could have been for all the obvious reasons.

I am btw, ultra left, a Green party gal, a Liberal and Libertarian of sorts, and I dont apologize for that.

Also, I’m enjoying this convo with you. You have a way of presenting alternate views without being a jerk about it. Lol! Love that about you.
