So following the Jennifer Lawrence interview on Ellen regarding voting for the Oscars (changing her mom’s votes) and Angelina Jolie campaigning for The Impossible, I was reminded of something that has endlessly fascinated me, which I’m not sure has ever been discussed on here:

How do you think your favorite actors or directors voted for the Academy Awards?

I’m not talking about the voting bloc in general, rather the individual votes of Academy members. And I don’t think most people go around Hollywood broadcasting who they are supporting year to year. Based on their personalities and their film choices, what do you think certain filmmakers’ preferences were, where they voted FOR friends or FOR their own studios…or more interestingly, when they voted AGAINST certain films or people?

I don’t really want this to turn into a game since I think there’s a lot that could be said here, but to give you an example of what I’m thinking about I’ll use Steven Spielberg.  Last year, it’s obvious he voted for War Horse, as he did for Munich in 2005. I’m betting he supported Benjamin Button with Kennedy and Marshall as producers, and Scorsese to finally win in 2006 though he may not have liked the movie. But what about other years?? I’m guessing he was a King’s Speech supporter and was moved by the story. And in 2009, he probably went with Avatar for its technical innovation…unless he quietly despises James Cameron like many in Hollywood. I can definitely see him unimpressed (and possibly harbor more extreme emotions) by Inglourious Basterds and Tarantino rewriting history. Earlier in the decade I’m sure he voted for at least one of The Lord of the Rings movies, and probably A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, and American Beauty with the Dreamworks label. Some years are trickier like 2007 or 2004.

Anyway, I don’t know where this conversation will lead, but I felt compelled to post it. What are your feelings on how certain people may have voted or will vote this year?

Lol. He doesnt ‘despise’ Cameron. He borrowed and used his equipment.

Who knows why anybody does anything?

I remember back on the old forum, and this was a few years ago, there being a thread similar to this where many people guessed how people would vote. I remember a big point being made that Oprah probably voted for any African-American contenders, but it is really hard to say.

What I said was just conjecture, that’s why I said “quietly.” I did pick up a little annoyance from Spielberg toward Cameron in the DGA interview he did with him and Abrams last year, so who knows…but that’s the point of the thread, to speculate.

Thanks for clarifying that for me TK. I guess I’m the wrong person to be posting in this thread.

Having watched The View, it is clear to me that Whoopi Goldberg will be voting for Lincoln for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

I think that many people vote for the nominees that are the closest to them personally, like former co-stars and co-workers, especially if they are overdue and have yet to win AND if the film really warrants a win. Most of them probably get carried away by other awards and momentum. The easiest guess is that they vote for themselves if they’re nominated.

There was a picture of Clooney voting for Jeff Bridges in 2009. That was gracious of him.

Is Ellen DeGeneres a member? She has hosted the Oscars in 2007, I think she is, or not?
She had praised Meryl in her show this year and said she would win, so she must have voted for her.

True although Bridges’s win that year was foregone conclusion way before Oscars. All 4 acting wins were that year.

It’s obvious how some people vote: Cameron will definetely vote for Life of Pi for almost everything. Last year Apatow, I think he’s a member, voted Bridesmaids for Picture, supporting actress, screenplay, and he praised Clooney for Descendants. That’s up his alley. Also, I’m sure he voted for 50/50-a dramedy produced by Rogen. He’s also friends with Crowe and PTA. With This is 40 coming out this year, he’ll probably stick within his own film.

Sandler also surely votes for comedy/drama and I’m sure he’ll vote for The Master this year or PTA. It’d be interesting to see how they voted. I want to see ballots.

Oprah is for sure voting for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Not to sound racist, but any black film, she swallows it up. And I’m sure Lincoln in all other categories. Maybe Middle of Nowhere if she saw it. I wanna see her reaction to Django Unchained!  Anne Hathaway will split her votes between Les Miserables and The Dark Knight Rises. She did say ‘as an academy member, it’s the best film I saw so far this year’.
