‘Iron Man 3’ Trailer Hits With Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin (Video)

    Published: October 23, 2012 @ 6:14 am

    By Brent Lang

The just-released trailer for “Iron Man 3” makes it seem like the old whiskey-swilling, skirt- chasing Tony Stark is no more.

This go-round, Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is haunted by nightmares and can’t get his old swagger back after saving the world in “The Avengers.”

“Honestly, there’s 100 people who want to kill me,” Stark says. “I just hope I can protect the one thing I can’t live without.”

Cut to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts in a very bad situation.

There are also explosions and close calls aplenty, not to mention a shot of Iron Man’s main antagonist in part three — the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Based on his voiceover it sounds like Sir Ben went a little heavy on the old autotune, but the character could be genuinely menacing.

“Some people call me a terrorist,” the Mandarin says. “I consider myself a teacher. Lesson number one: Heroes, there is no such thing.”

We’ll get the rest of the lesson on May 3, 2013 when “Iron Man 3” storms into theaters.

What do you think? Will “Iron Man 3” be as good as “The Avengers”?

I was surprised by how good the trailer was. Kingsley will make a good Mandarin (even with the character not being portrayed racially correct).

Still can’t get over Rhodey being the Iron Patroit. They’re getting this all wrong, I wish I never even went there.

The trailer was good, and the movie looks be darker than the previous two, with Tony seemingly losing everything. Though she’s in peril, I hope Pepper makes it (maybe becomes Rescue in the process?). One thing that will be interesting is how they explain how the rest of the Avengers can’t come and help out.

Trailer looks good. I too hope that Pepper Potts makes it. Paltrow and RDJ work so well together, and her Pepper was one of my favorites parts about IM 1 and 2. Even her brief cameo in ‘The Avengers’ was great.

Ugh I for one am getting sick of Pepper Potts and Paltrow for that matter. Introduce some new female characters from the Marvel Universe please. Kind of like how they did with Black Widow. (Sorry quite a comic book nerd for that matter.)

Trailer looks depressing. I am looking forward to Kingsley’s Mandarin however.

    ^Well, they are… Rebecca Hall’s character.

I’m not even sure who her character is. Though what can I say, I hope the film delivers.

    Rebecca Hall??

Well good for her. This should catapult her into audience awareness after all of her great work in Oscary films.

Hall plays Maya Hansen, one of the scientists who develops the Extremis virus (the other is Guy Pierce’s character, Aldrich Killian). She’s a minor character though and probably won’t be appearing outside of this film.

They need to introduce Carol Danvers and Jessica Drew already.

This trailer works. It makes me want to see the film.  And yes, the more Paltrow, the better.

That’s who I’m talking about, main Marvel characters like Jessica, Carol, and maybe even Jennifer Walters. Not these F list characters like Rebecca Hall’s character and Pepper Potts. It’d be a great way to set up the next Avengers film.

That’s all fine and dandy from a comic book standpoint, but I’m just saying that I also hope they keep Paltrow around. For whatever reasons Paltrow gets a bad rap, and I guess it’s either because of her personal life (GOOP) or her Oscar win (which I hardly find to be a travesty), but in my opinion she’s a very fine actress that had become underrated due to all the negative ink she gets from bloggers especially. Paltrow was great in ‘Iron Man’, and her chemistry with Downey Jr. was what sold their relationship to one another. I also enjoyed her in ‘Iron Man 2’ despite that film being more uneven and her getting less screen time. If they were to kill the character off to set in motion a downward spiral for Stark, and it benefitted the story, then so be it. I like her take on Pepper Potts and I like Paltrow as an actress, so the longer they keep her the better in my book.

Amen. But I really hope Pepper doesn’t get fridged. Too many women, especially in comic book movies, fall into that trap. Even Nolan’s Batman trilogy fell victim that that trope. Pepper is one of the few great women in comic book movies, and a lot of credit goes to Paltrow and her chemistry with Downey. I would also have given a supporting nom to Paltrow in 2008 for “Iron Man”, crazy as that sounds, in addition to a lead nom and win for Downey. Overall, Marvel has done a better job with their female characters for its self-produced films (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in “The Avengers” especially this year) than other studios, and I would hate for one of their best characters to go out needlessly.

Corrected that for you. I don’t care for her, I just want more Marvel characters that have yet to make an appearance in the film franchise is all.
