Sorry for making another “Supporting Actor-type-of-topic” but I think it’s an important question which deserves it own topic.

So I was thinking about this Abdi-Leto thing. I know most of you think that Leto has it in the bag, but if we are going deeper and deeper, I’m not that sure anymore…

So, basically critics awards and Golden Globes means shit if we are talking about Oscar chances. These circles means nothing for the Academy. These are generates buzz (mostly for the nomination) and so on, but doesn’t guarantee the award. So let’s skip the fact that Leto won most of the critics awards and the Globes.

SAG and BAFTA are the awards which are important as their members also voting for the Oscars.

    So it’s simple math:

Barkhad had most of the british votes and had american votes as well (which means he probably came 2nd at SAG) while Leto only had the american votes and got snubbed BY the british people. So, isn’t it kinda obvious that Abdi has bigger support in Academy-circles? I mean, of course, Leto won almost every single awards of the season…but also missed at one of the big ones and Barkhad didn’t miss any big ones.

So if that’s the case, I don’t get, why people not starting predicting Abdi right now. I know I do.

I say it: BARKHAD ABDI IS GOING TO WIN THE ACADEMY AWARD.

Also, let me remind you that the Academy can reward “Dallas Buyers Club” in another acting category, while “Captain Phillips” has only one big chance and it’s the Supporting Actor trophy.

You’re placing too much stock in his BAFTA victory. I can’t believe they denied the beautiful Fassbender.

Abdi is in second for sure, but there is quite a gulf.  Hill is third because he is largely untested and peaked late.

I wouldn’t say frontrunner, as Leto won SAG, which is probably the most important precursor, as well as the Golden Globe and BFCA. While the latter two don’t have any Academy overlap, they did generate press for him. It’s also possible, if not probable, that DBC missed out on nominations because not enough people got the chance to see it, which would make it similar to Christoph Waltz missing out on SAG last year.

Abdi’s definitely not the frontrunner, but with his win over Fassy, I’d say he’s the closest to a dark horse candidate right now.

The Abdi win seemed more like an anti-Fassbender vote. His bad boy image probably hurt him.

NO WAY Jonah Hill is third!!! It is considered a joke that he even has two nominations.

Good point but Abdi only won in Leto’s absence. His BAFTA win, as tremendous as it was, is not the most accurate Oscar barometer. I say Jared has this in the bag.

Abdi could be the one to upset out of all the acting categories IMO… What a performance to win an Oscar for too… It would be awesome and much more unique than Leto’s of-course-he’s-going-to-win soppy drag performance in Dallas

I would rank him in the top 2-3 for both years that he was nominated (preference). .

This one is going to be Leto. Abdi was great but Leto clearly has this in the bag.

Abdi, IMO, is the worst possible choice…for me, he is 5th.
The oscar will be LETO”S no doubt…

    2. Fassbender
    3. Cooper
    4. Hill
    5. Abdi

The BAFTA was a nice consolation prize and another way to snub the
great  FASSBENDER ,  who will win best actor someday…

I do think Abdi was runner-up all season long. The love for Fassbender was clearly not there ever and people seem to have forgotten how huge Captain Philips was when it came out last year. Surely the Tom Hanks snub didn’t help but that’s one of the biggest Oscar anomalies of the past few years, especially since it was in favor of Christian Bale’s sleepwalk of a performance in American Hustle.
