Many pundits are pushing AMY as best documentary but where is Cartel Land. An astonishing well crafted research about Mexican drug cartels localed in Michoacan and then the effects on the other side of border.
After winning DGA how come none is talking about it?

Because ‘Amy’ has inexplicably won a ton of critic and industry awards.

Also, voters have zero accountability. They may just watch the most hyped doc (if they even do that) and then cast their ballot.

They don’t have to watch all the documentaries so the most popular should win. A shame, btw. Amy is not even the best music documentary in this bunch.

I understand Amy is the most watchable Doc but even so, it really looks like a bio pic. If the Academy is really honest to their roots, other Documentaries should have the same chance.

    More watchable than Miss Simone?

Nina Simone and Amy had trouble celebrity lives, I liked both Documentaries but again what about the rest?
I have seen Cartel Land and I am still impressed by the escenario the director had to face while doing this project. I see why he got the DGA.

AMY is by far the most overrated documentary I’ve ever watched. It’s downright terrible if you ask me, and relies almost entirely on an emotional connection to the subject matter.

THE LOOK OF SILENCE is extraordinary and should win this award as quickly as a blink of the eye. Alas, it won’t.

Instead I am hoping that CARTEL LAND does break through and win. It’s a wonderful piece of work and though I loved SICARIO it is put to shame by the doc on similar subject matter.

I know it is difficult to compare documentary to a regular feature film, but as far as I am concerned, “The Look of Silence” is the best film of the year. However, I would be shocked if Amy lost. Documentaries somehow related to fame and troubled artist play well. Just look at “How to Survive a Plague” and “The Act of Killing” (both great documentaries about extremely important issues).

I wouldn’t say that The Look of Silence is the best film of last year when we had The Assassin released, but it is my favorite nominated film by far. I like it even better than Act of Killing. I would love to see it winning. Maybe if it wins Bafta…

benutty is right about Amy being bad. I am a huge Amy Winehouse fan. I saw her in concert twice. I know her life. The film creates a narrative about her life that is simply false and shamefully incomplete. Kapadia did the easy thing. He simplified and left no mysteries about one of the most fascinating artists of the century. He should have won for Senna, not for this.

I don’t like Cartel Land, but I’m Team Anything But Amy. It does have Bigelow’s name attached to it, let us not forget.

‘The Look of Silence’ was somehow snubbed at BAFTA despite ‘The Act of Killing’ winning the BAFTA for best documentary and reaping a nod in foreign film.

I forgot about that. What a shame

I agree so hard on both counts. Amy was a chore to get through. Oppenheimer should be winning his second Oscar, yet will lose again to a terrible music doc. Shameful.
