With all the talk of Brie Larson potentially playing “Captain Marvel,” it makes me wonder if going the superhero route is cause for celebration or not. On one hand, it’s obviously a boon for a career, so if you’re a fan of Larson or Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”) or Rick Famuyiwa (“The Flash”), etc., it’s good when they’re given the reins of a big-budget blockbuster. At the same time, even when a great actor or director is given that vote of confidence, the big franchise machines of Marvel and DC don’t seem to offer up much creative wiggle room.

    Thoughts?

To me, my thoughts on why they are doing it:
    1) Gets their name out there to more people
    2) Paycheck. Come on gotta pay the bills
    3) Paycheck gives them the financial freedom to do more indie projects
    4) Clout from a successful franchise lets them get pet projects off the ground with studios. “If I do Generic Superhero X blockbuster for you, you will help me get Pet Indie Project Y off the ground”
    5) It’s good to have accessible movies that kids/family/friends can/will see.

I like seeing established, “respected” veterans/actors taking on these kinds of roles. There are quite a few of them. I don’t see why any actor should stick with Oscary, dramatic, seriously so serious roles.
As for creativity, I wouldn’t say guys like Jack Nicholson and his demonic portrayal in Batman was curtailed or handcuffed by the role with plenty of wriggle room for creating this particular Joker.

For a newbie or relatively obscure actor, being in a block buster just might seem like they woke up in heaven.

I like what BamaEd posted about the ‘whys’.

And really, why not? My respect for the actor generally goes up when I see them doing any block buster (way to go, Indy gal Michelle Williams…). There are risks involved which they appear willing to take. But then, there are risks in any role and any film, tanking or receiving horrible reviews from those who have never made a film themselves…..lol…..

American actors have to protect their brand. Hollywood usually gives a grace pass to foreign talent because foreign talent can book a high quality foreign movie that is huge during award season and showcase them as a serious actor. While doing too many bad commercial studios movies makes it more difficult for American actors to book the choice award season vehicles.
