I just saw Paddington 2 and can’t help but admire how much range Sally Hawkins has as an actress! She would get my vote at SAG for The Shape of Water if I was a voter. Wonderful work from one of the most talented performers of our generation. 🙂

Remember, Sissy Spacek won Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice for In The Bedroom, yet Halle Berry won SAG and Oscar for Monster’s Ball.

OMFG! You’re right! How could I forget Sissy fucking Spacek! It’s basically the same story all over again. Sissy was also aiming at Oscar #2. She had the whole industry behind her, got a huge applause at GGs, was a frontrunner for SAG… just like Frances. But you know, Sally doesn’t have that something that worked for Halle. She ain’t black and hot. And those were/are big advantages.

Everytime you talk about someone hot winning I get excited for Robbie, then I remember she already lost the Globe so she has no chance anymore and I get even sadder.

Also, don’t forget about Adrien Brody. He won no precursors at all, yet he still won the Oscar. I guess the key difference between this case and Hawkins’ case is that Nicholson and DDL were trading wins, while McDormand is going for a sweep.

Yeah, that Globe win was be or not to be for her. She only needed that one win. For example if Dench, Ronan or Hawkins wins SAG then we have a race. But if by some miracle Robbie wins SAG then the race is over. That’s how much hotness is worth in best leading actress category. You just need one win (GG, BAFTA or SAG) when you’re hot to win Oscar. But don’t worry, Robbie is talented and uberhot, she’ll win one very soon.

Also, don’t forget about Adrien Brody. He won no precursors at all, yet he still won the Oscar. I guess the key difference between this case and Hawkins’ case is that Nicholson and DDL were trading wins, while McDormand is going for a sweep.

But were they really trading wins? HFPA was never truly fond of DDL but they had huge hardon for Nicholson. And whenever BFCA have no idea whom to predict they always make a tie. And BFCA do not count. Like at all. Especially then. Nicholson was never winning because he already had three. It was basically DDL semi-sweep. But yes it helped Brody that Caine, Cage, Nicholson and DDL had their own sympathizers. And The Pianist was clearly loved because it got three out of the main five categories.

I think Hawkins almost has no chance. The Globes and the Critics Choice (TSOW even won BP there) were the most likely precursors to award her in my opinion. I also think that Three Billboards is going to win big at BAFTA, so McDormand is winning this too. SAG is another story, since no actress already has two wins there. I can see McDormand losing SAG, but just as Meryl Streep (who didn’t win because they refused to award her again) and Casey Affleck (who lost just because Denzel was overdue), this snub wouldn’t hurt her chances at the Oscars. In my opinion, anyone except Dench can win SAG. So Hawkins at least has chances there, but if McDormand still wins BAFTA, the race is over.

I dont hate Sally’s performance but this film is about a mute, tap-dancing woman who works as a cleaning lady in a dreary government lair and falls in love with a sea beast is one part Bjork’s Dancer in the Dark, one part Amelie, and one part Free Willy. Ugh

Yes. People love her. I don’t think she’ll win SAG, which will put her at the biggest disadvantage, but I do think she’ll beat Frances at BAFTA where Shape of Water also did very well.

I would think Frances still has the advantage, but Sally’s still in.

I’ve seen The Shape of Water recently and she was outstanding. Everything depends on who wins the SAG. They usually go to hot young likeable actresses when the competition is strong (Paltrow, Berry, Theron, Witherspoon, Bullock, Portman, Lawrence, Larson, Stone). So I think there’s a high possibility that Ronan or Robbie winning, even though I want McDormand to win and Hawkins would be my second choice.

Darling, the disgusting Sally Hawkins will be lucky just to be nominated. It would be a travesty if she wins. The offensive McDormand is undeserving, too. Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet are the only ones who are Oscar-worthy this year.

Hmm… Sally Hawkins is 41. Bullock was 45 when she won.

@sasha, I do think Sally is pretty fucking hot, well, maybe because she is my type. However, Shape of Water is my favorite movie of the year followed by Lady Bird and I am a huge fan of Sam Rockwell so I won’t mind if he wins, but I don’t really think McDormand was the best in her category, that being sad, she is too big to ignore and only a huge upset would make she lose and it would probably by a Ronan’s win.

Honestly? No. If anyone is going to beat Frances, it’s Saoirse. If she can push the narrative of being the ingenue who has her third nomination at 23, she can do it.
