After the “snub” of Ridley Scott, the until thursday morning presumed frontrunner of the season to win best director, is now the Martian poised to go empty-handed at Oscars?

Excluding BP, which obviously it won’t win, it is so far not the favorite to win any of its remaining 6 nominations. But, given it’s box-office success and being a well-liked movie across the board, can the Academy surprise and give it a consolation prize? If so, which category?

It has never been a contender outside of Directing and possibly Adapted Screenplay. It was a no starter in cinematography and original score. Even if the Academy doesn’t go for traditional fare, there is Mad Max: Fury Road in production design and it probably is fourth or fifth in the sound categories. What can it possibly win?

The Martian is going to win two Oscars: Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. It could also win the two sound awards but I am not predicting it to do so.  Part of the reason I think The Martian is being underestimated is that it is distinctly AMERICAN and that matters. It will also appeal to voters who don’t care for Mad Max: Fury Road (I am convinced many of these close races are going to be decided by the female membership of the academy. Admittedly, there are far less of them than males, they will be the deciding factor in quite of a few of the closer races this year.) Nominations and winning are two entirely different processes. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got 13 nominations but only won I think two awards, right? The Turning Point and The Color Purple each got 11 nominations and no awards. American Hustle went 0-for-10 – so while they were clearly very well liked, they weren’t loved by enough voters to win any Oscars. I see this happening to the two fanboy favorites this year, which will both be held down to 2-3 Oscars each.

I think it’ll probably be shut out. Picture, Actor and Adapted Screenplay aren’t happening. And Mad Max, The Revenant and even Star Wars totally overshadow it in all the techs. I think the nominations are the reward.

Yeah I don’t see it winning anything. Mad Max will trump it in the technical categories and I think it will lose Adapted Screenplay to Room.

Production Design seems like its only chance at winning anything and even that is likely to not happen. So yes, 0-7 it is.

Are you suggesting women don’t like Mad Max? If so, you are so very very wrong and uneducated.

I can’t see it beating Star Wars, The Revenant, or Mad Max in the techs, and Scott missing is a good indicator that it really doesn’t have the neccesary support to win anything major. 0-7 it is.

I say Max Mad gets shut out. It wont win Best Picture, maybe maybe director, but the tech awards will go to The Revenant. I just watched it last night and it is the best made film of the year.

Production Design seems like its only chance at winning anything and even that is likely to not happen.

Even Gravity lost and it won seven Oscars.  Interstellar lost too.  The last four winners have been period pieces: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Great Gatsby, Lincoln and Hugo.

The categories where I have it in higher position are production design and visual effects in third place.

The Martian is not winning anything. There is nothing award winning about this film.

FreemanGriffin, nothing personal, but your BLIND hate for Mad Max is clouding your judgement!

It is one think to hate the movie (I respect the personal opinion) but to be so blinded by that hate and not recognize the mere technical achievement of the movie is you being a BAD critic.

I HATE in my guts The Hurt Locker. I HATE that movie so much it is a travesty to win Best Picture for me. But…BUT I am not blind to the parts of the movie that were good. The Directing was good and the Sound Mixing were good.

It is one thing to say I hate Mad Max. But to say that it’s visuals suck or it’s sound suck is just a blind hate.

Please do not respond to my post. There is nothing else to be said. Thank you.
