Everybody is in an agreement that Emma Stone will win the Best Actress Oscar this year, but Isabelle Huppert took down heavy favorite (Natalie Portman) at the Globes and has more precursor awards than Emma and Natalie. Is Emma a Lock? Can Portman, Huppert, Negga , or Streep upset?
    Who is your personal favorite?

    LMAO “Huppert vs. Stone”?

There should never have been a question about this.

    Of course, it’s ISABELLE HUPPERT!!!!!

Get back to me when Emma actually delivers a great acting performance.

Huppert delivered better performance in Elle and many of her previous films.

But Stone is a lock for Oscar

Am I allowed to say that BOTH are my favorites? They both gave amazing performances, and along with Ruth Negga, they would be great winners, I would even be okay with a Streep win to be honest. Best Actress is maybe the strongest Oscar category this year period! They even knew to correctly snub the bland and lifeless Amy Adams for Arrival. Seriously, great job by the Oscars on this one. 🙂

I agree, Amy Adams was the weaker candidate, and I’m glad to see Negga make the cut. Hope we get a surprise winner in the Best Actress category

It’s already set in stone (get it? ;)) But an upset by Huppert would be acceptable.

Don’t forget Huppert wasn’t nominated at this year SAG awards, i’m not sure Stone is lock for the win, but i agree with you guys when you say, there’s a fight  between Huppert & Stone… Maybe i’m not objective, because i’m French, but i think Huppert’s performance, was far more remarkable, and it’s truly acting, which is, in my opinion, must be rewarded…

If Portman were to deny Stone the Bafta, I’d predict Huppert at the Oscars. Remember Huppert was not eligible for the Bafta and wasn’t snubbed.

I am predicting Isabelle Huppert fully realizing that Emma Stone is the heavy favorite. I love both performances and will be hapy for Emma if she wins but my heart belongs to Isabelle! I guess I am hoping that voters who decide against Emma will coalesce around Isabelle..

I am intrigued by the Isabelle vs. Natalie contest at the Independent Spirit Awards. Since Isabelle really ought not to have been nominated (since Elle doesn’t seem eligible since it has no independent American film-making ties) yet they nominated her anyway – will it be another win like her Gotham win? They clearly liked Jackie, nominating it for Best Film and Best Director among other categories. I want Isabelle to win of course!

We have so many Best Actress threads already. Many of you know I’m predicting Huppert, but… do we really need a new thread?

Was Huppert ineligible for Things to Come as well? I heard she’s equally captivating in it as she is in Elle – if not better.

Elle is not a very good movie. You can watch all of it, it keeps you interested. No “boo! it has subtitles” attitude either, it’s very entertaining. But a great film it is not. So there’s that to begin with. Huppert’s performance is not subtle at all, it’s just not filled with huge Oscar moments, but subtle? Please. The woman is tough, she’s rough, she’s a fighter, but with not that many “moments” to choose from, this is not the performance that can win this woman a Best Actress Oscar. You can get one if you’re an overdue Winslet, Moore, Blanchett, for example, Anette Bening could’ve beaten Stone with this same performance in this same film, but a foreign actress nobody cares about? No. She might be an international icon, that’s 100%t true, but look at Nocturnal Animals and how well it’s done internationally, the Academy didn’t give a fuck. They didn’t care for Riva either. When they went with Cotillard she was a 30 something hot young and new thing, just like they like them in this category unless it’s an overdue actress, and to the Academy, to Americans, Huppert is not overdue at all. Plus it didn’t hurt that La Vie en Rose was filled with “oscar moments” you couldn’t deny. And her closest competitor was a 60 something legend who wasn’t in that many films and had already won once.

This is how I see her. I would have no problem predicting her, just like I wouldn’t have had a problem with Riva, or Rampling, but I have to be realistic and go with Stone. It makes much more sense.

Who beat Riva? Who beat Rampling? The same girl as Emma Stone? Not even close, Emma Stone has much more power in this race than those two girls, she’s already a Hollywood star, she’s going for her second BP win in 3 years (with a 14 time nominated film) and was already in a BP nominee before, at her age? It says a lot. And SAG already said yes to all of this, it doesn’t even matter Huppert wasn’t there. Sadly for those who NOW have decided to hate her and say she’s NOW a mediocre actress, it’s going to happen. It…makes…sense.

You could be blind and convince yourself that none of this is true and fight to the end, but with cases like this, it’s better to be surprised than to cling on to ideas that just don’t make sense with the Oscars as we know it. Emma Stone is THE perfect Best Actress winner if we go by what we know from Oscar history. Portman would be the other choice but Jackie was rejected by these people and almost the entire industry during this race, I doubt they’ll suddenly go for her. It doesn’t matter who you like best, what matters is what these people will do because we’re not voting, and if you use logic, it doesn’t make any sense to go with Huppert.

Huppert and her Golden Globe? That says more about Portman’s and Jackie’s weaknesses during the race, than it says about Huppert vs. Stone at the Oscars.

Predict Huppert if you like to play at predictions and be brave and take a chance, and all of that stuff, I did it with SAG and got super screwed, but I did it for fun. Don’t predict Huppert because you liked her and you’re on the bandwagon that has now decided somebody you have liked before is suddenly a mediocre actress, you don’t matter, you don’t vote. The correct prediction is Emma Stone.

I wouldn’t label Stone a Davis-level lock but still, Huppert almost surely ain’t winning the Oscar without that SAG nomination. And, before I hear the yada yada about Marcia Gay Harden, keep in mind that Supporting Actress race was a supreme clusterf-uck ripe for a huge upset. Stone, on the other hand, is the clear, commanding favorite.
