It is in the top 5 greatest movies of all time and the greatest show on earth won best picture while singin in the rain didn’t get nominated is it because of an American in Paris winning the year before?

I don’t know the specifics, but I sure as hell think Donald O’Connor deserved a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Cosmo Brown – what a tour de force. O’Connor actually won the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy Actor that year.

100% Concur. After seeing the film, I remember being struck by his omission, thinking there must have been something wrong with the performance that I didn’t see. It’s such a vibrant piece of work that brightens up the film whenever he appears.

It got 2 nods- for Jean Hagen, Best Supporting Actress- and Scoring of a Musical Picture. Shame it didn’t get more.

I also read the studio chose to promote Ivanhoe (which did get a Best Picture nomination) over this, so campaigns were indeed active back then too.

One of my favorites, as well- should’ve gotten more recognition.

I always feel like a rube for saying this, but I don’t care for the movie. I have read many, many descriptions of what people think makes this movie great, and I always feel like I saw a different movie.

To me, Jean Hagen is wonderful and got a deserved nomination. Other than that, wouldn’t consider it for anything.

To go over the history (SitR is one of my favorite musicals, though there are others from the era – The Band Wagon, Meet Me in St Louis, On the Town) I admire as much or more, and they all also got little Oscar recognition.

SitR opened early in 1952, before the Oscar ceremony that awarded An American in Paris. That award pretty much ruled out any chance that it would be remembered the following year. It also was discounted because (and this is part of the charm of the film) it recycled previously used musical numbers, rather than created original ones. Also, as a film about the film industry – remember that the great The Bad and the Beautiful also didn’t get a BP nom for 1952 – it was considered trivial and less important and just not that big a deal at the time.
