The smackdown videos Pete Hammond and I are doing are lotsa fun. U agree? Our Best Picture one was good, methinks, but this new one on Best Actor is a riot:

That link goes right to YouTube video so you don’t have trouble viewing on a mobile device. In case you missed our Best Picture battle:

Let me know whatcha think! Pete and I plan to do many more of these throughout the derby season. Anne Thompson and I plan to team up and do some of these too. Stay tuned. I’m sure I can get Jeff Wells and Dave Karger on board, too — later on, once we’ve seen all of the flicks.

Enjoyed the video, especially since I could finally watch one without problems!

However, I don’t agree with your comment that Michael Caine has only been nominated in four of the past five decades.

The Academy database (http://awardsdatabase.oscars.org/ampas_awards/DisplayMain.jsp?curTime=1447682151133) lists Michael Caine’s nominations as follows:

    1966  Alfie

    1972  Sleuth

    1983  Education Rita

    1986  Hannah and Her Sisters

    1999  The Cider House Rules

    2002  The Quiet American

Bryan Cranston and Will Smith are not going anywhere in their dud movies and Johnny Depp peaked way too early.

I agree that Fassbender is helped by the fact that the performance is BIG. He’s an absolute machine in that movie and one thing that might work in his favor against Leo is that his film might be more accessible since The Revenant could be “too much” for some. I don’t think Fassbender will be hurt by not campaigning. He’s just pulling a Mo’Nique. I do think that Ian McKellen is somebody to watch out for, though.

I won’t believe that he will. But I have a feeling he’ll be the “Robert Duvall/Felicity Jones” of this year: Someone I kinda don’t want to see happen because the performance is just fine. Nothing special. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he will.

I didnt find this interview ‘funny’, but I did find it interesting.

Looks as if Pete thinks almost everyone has a shot at a nomination. And really, perhaps they do….

I agree with most of what he says. Ian McKellen, for example, gave my favorite perf so far this year. He’s ‘better’ than Fassbender imo.

Hope he’s right about Depp. I’d love to see him back in the game.

I do wish the two of you had declared (as of this moment, subject to change) who you each honestly think will be the five final nominees (:

It (the smackdown) ends very abruptly!

At the moment, I am predicting: Caine, Damon, Di Caprio, Fassbender, and Redmayne.

At the moment, I am rooting for: Damon, Fassbender, Hardy (in Legend), McKellan, and Redmayne, with honorable mentions for Hanks, Cranston, John Cusack, Gaspard Ulliel, and Andrew Garfield.

I am rooting against: Di Caprio, Depp (a very vapid unmemorable dull performance imo), Jackson, and Smith. On the fence about Geza Rohrig (haven’t seen it yet).

I am also wishing that Jacob Tremblay would be moved to Best Actor to avoid the inevitable category fraud if he’s nominated in the Supporting Actor category.

So you’ve seen The Revenant and The Hateful Eight already then?

Absolutely! He is so good and has been slighted too often for exemplary performances.

I’m thinking Damon is going to end up winning. They don’t seem to be in a rush to give DiCaprio an award, and the Academy loves Matt & Ben. If he wins the Globe and wins the Critics for Action Movie Actor and gets on a roll I can see it happening.
