I wanted to bring this topic up for many reasons.  Im excited that a black actor will be playing a villian in a big budget comic book movie.  I know it will be a racial undertone to all of this because i think the villian,Electro, is white in the comic books.  I remember it was a racial undertone to ‘The Hunger Games’ movie because they made a couple of the characters black that were supposely white in the books(I assume this…I never read the books).  Do you think it will be a racial undertone to Foxx being the first superhero villian in a major movie? I want to hear your thoughts.

I guess that depends on the screenplay, but no, I dont. But then, people can always find a racial undertone to anything. Sometimes, it’s justified.

Racial undertone? I don’t get it… You mean because he’s black it’s racist for him to play a bad guy? If THAT isn’t racist, then I don’t know what is. The race card is played way too often. Thank goodness for a film like ‘Cloud Atlas’ where race and gender are just features of the HUMAN race.

I took him to mean that because Foxx plays the villain because the comic is of a different skin colour (lol), that the film would be controversial in any way, at least to some segments of the viewing audience.

    It’s a tough question though I agree.

I don’t get what the big deal is. It’s Electro. His race is incidental, he’s a minor character anyway. If anyone really cares they need to just get over it. Granted, I suppose I get the reverse issue… If he were black in the comics and a white guy was playing him in the film version, people would be going crazy. Ugh… I just think it’s silly.

Jmil, I’m just stating my thoughts… Regardless of what this post was about. Perhaps you could elaborate? I guess I don’t understand what you mean by “racial undertones”. My final point- if Jamie Foxx is cast, good for him. I hope it’s a good role. I don’t think Electro is a good character, he never really interested me, but hopefully they’ll change that with the film version and give him depth. It’ll be interesting seeing Jamie Foxx play him, and the idea of that has me more excited than I normally would’ve been. I’m more interested in how this version of Electro will tie into the film’s plot and the over-arching story they’re going for with this trilogy.

Tye  i agree with you.  I think it is great that Foxx was casted as the main villian in the new spiderman movie.  I just know certain people will be pissed because the studio and etc made this electro guy, who was white in the comic book, black in the movie.  I have gotten into text message fights already on imdb about this issue..

First of all it’s JAMIE Foxx, not Jaime.

Second of all I hate when they cast black actors in the roles of white characters and vice versa.

^When it’s a minor character like Electro, I don’t find myself caring so much. But I totally understand your point. People would’ve gone berserk had Will Smith been cast as Batman or something, and obviously they’d have done the same if Black Panther were to be played by Matt Damon. But for me, when the character’s race doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t bother me. This is one such case.

This news would put me to sleep if it weren’t for the overpowering reek of desperation.

Michael Clarke Duncan played Kingpin in Daredevil.

Kingpin is white in the comics and I don’t remember it being a huge issue.

How about a Hatfield playing a McCoy? Or a MacDonald playing a Campell, an ugly tradition the latter which I’ve seen?

Or, a black or white person playing a black or white person in reverse?

    Which is ‘worse’? Lol!!!!!

Any controversy coming from this, I’d take a cursory look at the group doing the complaining.

Well Sasha, you need to evolve.  It’s 2012 not the 1950s.  I wish some people would open their minds.
