Jane Fonda to play Nancy Reagan in ‘Butler’
Actress will portray former First Lady in Lee Daniels pic
    By JEFF SNEIDER

    Reagan

In the midst of recruiting an all-star ensemble for his long-gestating passion project “The Butler,” director Lee Daniels has tapped Jane Fonda to play Nancy Reagan.

Based on a Washington Post report by Wil Haygood, pic follows Eugene Allen, the White House butler whose career started with Harry Truman in 1952 and ended in 1986 with Ronald Reagan.

Forest Whitaker is closing a deal to play Allen, while Oprah Winfrey remains in talks to play his wife. David Oyelowo is in negotiations to play Allen’s son, while Liam Neeson and John Cusack are circling presidential supporting roles as Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, respectively. Fonda will appear in a handful of scenes as the first lady of the United States.

Daniels, who is directing from a script he co-wrote with Danny Strong, is in the process of finalizing financing for the pic, which has no distributor onboard yet. Pamela Williams will produce through Laura Ziskin Prods. along with Hilary Shor.

Though no cast deals are in place yet, producers are eyeing a summer start date.

Fonda, who was last seen opposite Lindsay Lohan in Garry Marshall’s “Georgia Rule,” next stars in Bruce Beresford’s “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding,” which IFC Films opens in limited release on June 8.

Fonda is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Very possibly.. Don’t know much about Eugene Allen. What about his life is so fascinating? Does anyone know his story? Cusack as Dick?

This will of course cause the right wing blogosphere to go ballistic.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if Nancy Reagan is aware of this, not that it is for her to give approval.

“Hanoi Jane” playing Nancy Reagan will ruffle a few feathers.

What’s both hilarious and frightening about today’s GOP is that the Reagans seem almost moderate by comparison…

The weirdest part of this for me is that it is being co-written by Danny Strong, who played Jonathan on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” He apparently also wrote “Recount” for HBO.

    I had no idea.

Waiting for Daniels’ next film to see if he isn’t a one hit wonder (though he has done very well with getting good performances from his actors).

He has another film besides Precious already – the shockingly atrocious, cover-your-eyes, oh-my-god-they-seriously-didn’t-did-they Shadowboxer.

I’ve seen Shadowboxer (prior to Precious). I know a lot of people that hate it, but I kind of enjoyed it. I just love that Daniels got Helen Mirren to agree to be in this film which is crazy, ridiculous and, it must be said, sort of trashy. It’s not high art, but she she really sells it, and it’s shocking and totally hysterical.

I had to make sure I read that title right. Wow! Crazy casting choice, but I think it could end up being a savvy move for Jane Fonda.

Going conservative seems to be the move for A-list (and very liberal) actresses.. Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, now Jane Fonda. A trend happening before our very eyes?

Jane Fonda became a born-again Christian (which apparently is one of the reasons her marriage to Ted Turner broke up) but she is still very much liberal in her political outlook.  But if you mean that these liberal actresses are suddenly all playing famous conservative women, it does not necessarily mean the portrayals are flattering (see: Julianne Moore’s acidic portrayal of Sarah Palin).

Jane Fonda doesn’t really look the part of Nancy Reagan. Nancy is slight of frame, not feisty in the least bit.
But i’d love to see Jane Fonda do a movie with Jodie Foster someday (two JFs!!)
Speaking of Jodie, she would be good for playing Hillary Clinton (who is not in The Butler).
And Jodie and Hillary both have the same drive and temperament.
