So the movie Loving just got picked up by Focus Features and will likely be a factor in the awards race. Loving is based on a true story about a real-life couple named Mildred and Richard Loving, played by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton, who were sentenced to prison in 1958 because of their interracial marriage.
Michael Shannon also co-stars and Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) is directing and writing.
Agree. I got “Loving” with 7 nomination on my early 2017 oscar predictions
Best Picture, Best Director, Shannon, Negga, screengplay included
Wait, Jeff Nichols is releasing two films he wrote and directed in 2016?
I expect the critics to go hard for one of them.
O man…if this were 1958 I’d be so in jail, and twice.
Watch “The Loving Story” on HBO as a primer to this. So looking forward to this story being told on the big screen, especially in this current racialized climate.
Really great news.
Between this, The Birth of a Nation and Fences, we’ll see a lot of black actors-actresses getting recognition next year. Focus knows they ain’t fooling around. Too bad the characters are sterotyped in terms of fighting their skin color in their plots, but… what can we do? That’s up to the producers. We’re only audiences-predictors.
