NEW YORK (AP) — Lenny Kravitz has signed on for his first leading film role, playing singer Marvin Gaye in a biopic that will be shot next year.

The rocker’s publicist Carleen Donovan confirmed the news Tuesday. Kravitz has played supporting roles in the past, including a small part in “The Hunger Games.”

Rolling Stone first reported details about the 48-year-old performer’s part in the film, directed by Julien Temple.

The magazine says the “Are You Gonna Go My Way” singer will portray Gaye during the 1980s when he was fighting his addictions and attempting to restart his career. Gaye died in 1984 after being shot by his father.

I have mixed feelings about this bio, but none about Kravitz!  He’s a natural talent. They signed the right man.

Agreed, Kravitz is a great actor in his very few cameos like Precious and HG.

I am so happy for him. He’s been great in every snippet I’ve seen him in. And it’s odd they describe his role in HG as “small”. I suppose, relatively speaking, it is. He’s the one actor in Precious that impressed me the most. Better than all of the others.

I too was greatly impressed by him in both ‘Precious’ and ‘The Hunger Games’. He’s a natural.

I don’t remember him in “Precious”. Who did he play? Precious’ dad?

Here’s some small scenes with him from ‘Precious’. In fact, they might be his only scenes.

Lenny Kravitz as Nurse John and another here.

I don’t like this choice. His voice doesn’t sounds like Gaye’s, so no point in having him sing. You could just get a better actor and use Marvin’s original voice. After all, this a film, the performance is more important than singing, and suspencion of disbelief. I rather actually hear Gaye singing and have a great actor do the role instead of someone middle of the road (in terms of acting) like Kravitz overacting.

Just because he’s one hot piece of chocolate ass doesn’t mean he’s a good actor. He’s very mediocre at best. Do not like this choice at all.

I’ll certainly be happy if he snags a Best Actor nomination for this.

Ps to Sasha: Thanks for the reminder about his hotness. That’s something you’re right about.

LOL–don’t hold back; tell us what you really think!

I suspect it really doesn’t matter who plays Marvin Gaye, since they will have to dub his singing voice, which was unique. I suppose Kravitz is one of the less heinous choices they could have made for casting the role.
