Vertigo actress Kim Novak has called the treatment she received following her Oscars appearance “bullying”.

Following her presenting stint at the Academy Awards, the 81-year-old was subjected to jibes about her looks, including a tweet from Donald Trump.

“I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies. We can’t let people get away with affecting our lives,” she wrote in an open letter.

She admitted she had “fat injections” in her face.

“In my opinion, a person has a right to look as good as they can, and I feel better when I look better,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

But she added: “We need to stand up to them (bullies) in a healthy way by speaking out, working out and acting out. I am speaking out now because I don’t want to harbour unhealthy feelings inside me anymore.”

In Hollywood, after the Oscars, I was bullied by the press and the public on the internet and TV”

    Kim Novak

She told the Associated Press that she did not leave her house for days after the ceremony, and the criticism she received “really did throw me into a tailspin and it hit me hard”.

She was also critical of the comments made about actress Liza Minnelli during the ceremony, when host Ellen DeGeneres jokingly mistook her for a male impersonator.

    ‘Overwhelming standing ovation’

Novak blamed her halting speech during the ceremony on taking medication to “relax”, which she regretted.

She said she had walked away from the Hollywood industry many years ago because of the immense pressure it had placed on her, but felt ready to return to the spotlight.

“When I was honoured at the Cannes Film Festival last year, I received an overwhelming standing ovation,” she wrote.

“Yet, in Hollywood, after the Oscars, I was bullied by the press and the public on the internet and TV.”

She said she felt the time was right to “address the elephant in the room” publically for the first time after appearing at a film festival and speaking about it openly.

“I realised that I had to stand up not only for myself but for other people that don’t have the courage to do so,” Novak said. “I feel like I have a mission.”

I think the articles after the Oscars and all the social media posts about her were rough.

This is why most stars want nothing to do with being presenters. It isn’t because the Academy doesn’t ask or isn’t interested – it is that mainly those who agree have something to sell or have a reason to get attention (upcoming movie usually).

Poor woman. But good for her that she’s speaking out like this. I admit I had the WTF face like everybody else when she came out during the show. Her manager/aides should’ve known better though that the reaction she got was imminent prior to her appearance.

Good for her. She is such an icon and being trashed by anonymous, no doubt acne-ridden idiots sitting around in their mothers’ basements…

    All I can say is…

    Botox is a b*tch.

    Insecurity is a b*tch.

Fortunately, we have lots of examples of people going under surgery and giving terrible facial expressions (Kim Novak, Nicole Kidman, xtc.) so I don’t understand why some young people want to ruin their bodies at this point of multi information. The funniest thing is that they will cry in 2049 and we predicted it.

    Less botox, more therapy.

Not that I’m an expert on plastic surgery but there are examples out there of those that have done it and it looks really good (Jane Fonda, Robin Wright). If you have the money and you get to the point where you’re noticing things that you dislike and you don’t have control over changing it through other means, like with exercise, than it shouldn’t be surprising that people do this.

    I’m happy that she’s made a statement.

It really was rude and mean of Ellen DeGeneres to call Liza Minnelli a female impersonator. As a gay person, DeGeneres should know better than to score a cheap joke for the homophobes in the audience.

I also agree that the ill-mannered treatment accorded Miss Novak by cowardly anonymous bloggers will make any older actress or actor think twice about presenting at the Oscars. It’s simply not worth the humiliation.

Perhaps she could make a “pro-active” preventative decision and cut her head off above the shoulders, just in case she develops wrinkles and stuff.

And good for her. It was her choice. She’s earned the right to tell her detractors to bite it.

The Liza Minnelli joke was delicious.

And it has nothing to do with homophobia, it has to do with physical deterioration.

But this is nothing new, the Oscars often have big jokes for big celebrities because “that’s what you receive if you are nominated or win an Oscar, prestige has this “funny” consequences in the ceremony”.

Julia Roberts’s bribes (Steve Martin, 2001)
Nicole Kidman’s nose (Steve Martin, 2003)
    Sean Penn (Chris Rock, 2005)
George Clooney’s single (Fey and Poehler, Golden Globes 2014)
Meryl Streep’s getting all the roles (Fey and Poehler, Golden Globes 2014)

The list goes on and on…

Donald Trump is a horrible human being who seems to have a complete inability to show empathy. I’d be curious to see how high he would score on the Psychopath Test.

Good for Kim Novak for calling out Hollywood on their body image shaming and transphobia.

Transphobia, not homophobia. This is a completely different topic. If you don’t know the difference, you need to educate yourself (sorry, I can’t put it any more simply than that).

Again, the joke was about physical deterioration, not about Liza looking like a man. Get over it.

And Academy Awards are gay’s universe. gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc.’s universe.
It’s full of icons, moments, scenes, dresses…..

And this as suggestion, you’d should calm down, because if you lose your nerves, you lose your right.

If you want to talk about offensive, you should check Seth McFarlane’s jokes about Quvenzhane Wallis and the Boobs Song. That was offensive.
