She was so lead. The movie title is Her. NOT Him. She is much as a leading player as Joaquin

The movie title is not quite an indicator though. And in that case It’s Her not She.

The only lead is Joaquin. She’s definitely supporting.

    LEAD!

Just like J-Law for Silver Linings Playbook, Amy Adams for American Hustle, Viola Davis for The Help, Steve Carrell for Foxcatcher, Felicity Jones for The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore for The Kids are All Right >>> all are co-leads with another partner.

I just think you can have two lead performances in a movie even if the leading lady is never on screen.

    Some suggestions for future polls:
    Tom Hanks “Saving Mr. Banks”
    Will Forte “Nebraska”
    Oprah Winfrey “The Butler”
    Josh Hutcherson “The Hunger Games”
    Marion Cotillard “Nine”
Helena Bonham Carter “The King’s Speech”
    Christoph Waltz “Django Unchained”
    Vincent Cassel “Black Swan”
Jessica Chastain “A Most Violent Year”

The story is about Theodore, the rest of the characters are supporting and surrounding to his narrative.

Samantha have a definitive and constant presence to the whole film, but only dependant to him. A whole other proportion, but she still is just as supporting as Rooney Mara, Amy Adams and Olivia Wilde to Joaquin Phoenix. To me is not about not being on screen -completely irrelevant- nor about screen time, it’s just story wise.

LEAD LEAD LEAD. If we consider Samantha as a physical entity and not just an off-screen voice, Johansson is undoubtedly co-lead with Joaquin Phoenix. Yes the film is slightly more centered around Theodore, but the number of scenes without Samantha don’t add up to enough for me to consider her supporting. Her screen-time (for want of a better term) and narrative importance are closer to Phoenix’s than to Adams’s or Mara’s.

Being the title character does not automatically mean you are the lead performer (take a look at Rebecca, Saving Private Ryan, Saving Mr. Banks, Dr. Strangelove, Finding Nemo, Kill Bill, etc.)

The Joker is the reason to watch The Dark Knight, but I wouldn’t consider Heath Ledger the lead performer.

Supporting. She would have made a fine nominee there as well.
