Scarlett Johansson in “Her”
Anthony Hopkins in “Silence of the Lambs”
This is a hard one, I went with lead, but because it is so centred on Brando, everyone is basically supporting.
I’d lean towards Supporting, as the character is ultimately reactionary to Brando throughout the story. That said, a number of others have earned Best Actress nominations for doing far less as female love interests, so recognition there wouldn’t have surprised me.
It’s Brando’s story. Brando’s arc. She’s supporting.
Lead. Eva Marie Saint’s character is a leading role. Columbia Pictures played fast and lose by submitting her
in the supporting actress category. They didn’t think she stood a chance against Judy Garland’s talk of
the industry performance in ” A Star Is Born “. They hedged their bets, campaigned successfully for supporting
and it paid off she won. While the presumed would be, shoe-in Garland lost to Grace Kelly’s ” Country Girl “.
Eva Marie Saint’s character of Edie doesn’t have the magnitude of Brando’s Terry, but is does pillar his in weight.
Brando’s character drives the story while her’s is the catalyst. Her character of Edie serves as Brando’s conscience
which establishes and shapes the movie. She has the second largest role in the film. She was a lead.
