I can’t wait for both of these movies to come out already and it screams OSCAR BAIT all around. Carol will probably premiere this year at Cannes. We’ll have our first best actress and supporting actress contender this year. Todd Haynes directed Julianne Moore in two of her most iconic performances with “Safe” and “Far From Heaven.” I’m super excited what kind of interpretation will Cate the Great do as a 1950’s housewife. I’m pretty sure there would be comparisons to Cathy Whitaker (lol).

     “Carol”
Stars: Cate Blanchet & Rooney Mara

    “Freeheld”
Stars: Julianne Moore & Ellen Page

The last two best actress winners are probably gonna go head to head in next year’s Academy Awards for potential Best Actress contenders. There’s a big possibility for them as returning nominees along with their co-stars as potential supporting actress contenders Rooney and Ellen.

Which film has a better shot at a Best Actress and Supporting Actress nomination? Carol or Freeheld? What do you guys think?

I would say both films with get the two nominations but of the film Carol has the better chance of nominations and possibly double wins. Also if you add The Danish Girl onto the two of these films it’s a big year for the LGBT community in terms of new movies.

Carol has a better cast, a better director and his more Academy-friendly. I’d go ahead and call Blanchett and Mara early locks for nominations. I’m so excited for it to premiere!

I am rooting for Cate to get her third win but it may not come so soon. It will take many years and many more nominations

A Todd Haynes film is far from Oscar bait and normally not Academy-friendly. Freeheld on the other hand sounds very Academy-friendly (e.g., female diagnosed with terminal cancer). Carol, however, with its cast, crew, and distributor looks like a more reliable contender, and this could also be Haynes’ most mainstream film.

I don’t want to choose. These two can both happen. Moore and Blanchett can both happen. Mara and Page can both happen. Even Paulson in “Carol”. And some male actors as well. There is no such rule that only one lesbian drama can happen, so I’m rooting for both. Let’s hope that Moore will finally get something for playing such a challenging lesbian role (she was overlooked for both “Chloe” and “The Kids Are All Right”).

Moore has been nominated for two not completely straight characters in Boogie Nights and The Hours.

Blanchett can win a third Oscar faster than Streep did. I assume in Streep’s case they were waiting for a second Sophie’s Choice level performance and it never came.

    Why the rivalry?

Can’t we have two lesbian dramas in 2015 without making one prevail over the other?

I think both will happen, but ”Carol” will be bigger. Hoping that Haynes get the BD nominations that he truly deserves.

I’m rooting for both films to be big Oscar players next year too!
