In 2009, I ranked her 5th in the Best Actress category for her performance in “Precious”. I liked her (more than I liked Monique), but the movie was over the top and the other nominees were more deserving in my opinion.

I also criticized her for being a one-time wonder. I hate one-time wonders. Always did. They are lucky with a role, then nothing happens to them ever again. Tragedy. But Gabby proved me wrong. Yes, she doesn’t have a huge movie career or she’s not the current “it” girl, but she’s doing very well. I really adored her in “The Big C” and I actually find her performance Emmy-worthy in “American Horror Story: Coven”. She’s also very cute in the “Don’t Stop” music video by Foster the People.

I’m so proud of her. Yes, she may not be a super diva, but she’s talented and loveable enough to get nice roles and that’s what matters!

    What do you think?

you critized HER for being a one hit wonder? as if actresses that look like her are getting offered blockbuster after blockbuster? as if she was #1 on every directors list after Precious? I can’t.

Honestly, I thought she would never have another job in Hollywood after Precious, but I am very happy that she did. She’s a very talented actress. I particularly liked her in (other than Precious) American Horror Story and The Big C.

I recall the interview Tom did with Gabourey. There were some very stupid ignorant trolls who threw crude, vulgar racist remarks her way (redundant adjectives I suppose). She handled it with aplomb a big smile and a whole lot of class. It is her skin colour they attacked; not her weight or personal appearance.

I liked her in Precious and after seeing her handle that interview, I gained a lot of respect for her and wish her nothing but the best.

But as for Mo’Nique, I do believe that Vince’s comment about liking Sidibe MORE than M is the first time I’ve seen this opinion in print or anywhere.

I believe I’ve made my feelings about M’s perf and M’s persona quite clear since her win………lol.

Monique in her category perfectly deserved her Oscar. My personal choice was Marion Cotillard in Nine. 🙂

I have adored Sidibe since Precious. From the line up, I thought she was the best even more than Sandra who I am happy that one. She was that underdog I have been rooting for to still be relavant post precious. I thought she did a great job on The Big C and she even had a nice SNL hosting gig and I think she was one of the highlights of Coven. I hope she gets more projects in movies though.

Gabourey was far and away the best of the Best Actress nominees in 2009.  The fact that she was not the frontrunner is, imo, outrageous.  And I won’t even get into the fact that it was Bullock’s performance in The Blind Side that beat her.  Having grown up with girls like Precious, her portrayal was spot on.  She was fascinating and thrilling to watch from beginning to end, along with all of the other incredible performances in Precious.  I consider the movie to have one of the greatest ensembles in movie history, and Sidibe gives one of my favorite screen performances.

Outside of Precious, Sidibe is not a flawless actress.  In the hands of a good director, though, she really shines.  And outside of acting, the girl is a star.  Her personality is infectious, and she’s someone you really root for.  I think it’s impressive that she has been doing quite well for herself despite being such a specific character type that closed-minded Hollywood rarely writes for.

I swear it’ll say on my tombstone: “SIDIBE WAS ROBBED IN 2009.”

Yeah Cotillard was robbed so bad for Nine. If she would have gone supporting she would have been nominated instead of Cruz she was one of the least exciting people in that movie. But Cotillard should have gotten in in lead over Helen Mirren. But I don’t want to go off topic on this thread dedicated to the lovely Gabby Sidibe

It must be hard to get parts if you’re Sidibe because, let’s face it and let’s speak it out loud, physic appearance RULES in goddamn Hollywood. So, after a 2009 breakout movie and a 2010 Oscar Best Actress Nomination, Sidibe has been in two TV shows. Good for her. It’s not the top of the world, but step to step… I could see her getting nominated in the supporting category again, for one of those classic supporting comedy roles…

Yes. In her first Oscar-nominated work, she kinda used all the baity stuff so I doubt she can get a nom for playing another unfortunate character (maybe she will, let’s be hopeful). Comedy is different. She can pull that off easily!

I disliked her category at the oscars, and was not rooting for anyone. However, she was the best of the five and should´ve won.

I didn´t like her performance in Coven. Just bad…(not as bad as Bates #cant believe they royally butchered this category for the scond year in a row)

She should do more films…I think she´s got the talent …
