In a span of a week we had the following leaks:

    Room
    Brooklyn
    Carol
    Straight Outta Compton
    Inside Out
    The Peanuts Movie
    The Revenant
    The Hateful Eight
    Creed

The most damaging leaks are the ones which have not been wide-released yet (such as Revenant, Hateful Eight and Carol). It’s inevitable for DVD Screeners to leak; perhaps it’s time for studios to release their award contending films earlier in the year?!

Inside Out was already availible on Blu-ray since November, so that isn’t surprising their is a high-quality copy of it on line.

Let’s not. No need to encourage the practice.

Do not forget Sicario.  I am in heaven.  We had only Black Mass for so long and suddenly, everything is out.  The leaks really vary in quality though.  Carol is really bad, Sicario is Blu-ray, The Revenant is great and Brooklyn was definitely lacking.

Straight Outta Compton was in theatres months ago. So was Creed. I went to go see them.

Ever since I really started paying attention to the race several years ago screeners have always leaked.

Sicario’s quality is high cause it’s digital HD release is Tuesday (though how these people get it so early idk). The Martian’s digital release is on Tuesday as well.

Obviously the films that were released a lot earlier like Sicario, Creed, Straight Outta Compton would be less affected box office wise by the screener leaks than the ones which are still in limited release or not even released yet. Which begs the question: why build so much buzz over these award-contending films but withold/limit their releases till much later? Studios will only run the risk of losing revenue as moviegoers turn to the already-leaked screeners, The Academy should adopt the same Foreign Picture eligibility rules for all films, in which the release deadline is set on the last day of Sep for a film to be eligible.

Anyway this year’s screnner leak release pattern is a lot more different than the previous years. We used to get screeners leak, perhaps once or twice every week, from late Oct to early Jan. This year we had a long drought in Oct, Nov, and suddenly a whole bulk of screeners are released over the last week, sometimes even twice a day!

I’ve been depending on screeners for many years (the first one I can remember is The Hours). Living where I do is really the only option for the majority of films. Pretty much every popular film was released day and date here this year (and also films like Bridge of Spies, Sicario, for example), but of course it all stops when it comes to the majority of Oscar contenders because of either they’re indies, or their limited release schedule. So while it’s a sad practice, for this little hobby of ours, it’s really the only option. Believe me, if I had this exact life (money, car, job) in one of the big cities in the US (don’t think this is only for foreigners), I would totally go see everything in theaters. But I can’t so…

It hasn’t been in “the span of one week”. Carol, Room, Brookly were released thursday, Peanuts, Hateful Eight, Creed and The Revenant saturday. Sicario came out last week, Black Mass was out maybe two months ago but in awful audio quality until two weeks ago when it came out right, Inside Out, Compton have been out for many weeks.

I Smile Back, the Blythe Danner film and Youth are also out.

I’m the most impressed with The Revenant though, I didn’t think it would come out this quickly or in such good quality. The copy looked perfect. Carol does not, for example.

I remember last year was also like this. No screeners for a while and suddenly everything was out at once, CHRISTMAS!. For the first time in many, many years I had seen everything weeks before the Oscars. This year it looks like it’ll be the same.

I’m sorry but If movies get around you eventually, it’s ridiculous to say that downloading is your only option. I live close enough to NY that I’ll go to the festival and catch some things if I’m around, but otherwise I wait for it to get to my local arthouse theater a few months later.

Leaks, to me, are a necessary evil. I don’t live in NY or LA, so because it takes forever for these dang movies to get here, when they come online, I watch them. While it has its cons, it also allows me to save money to see certain films that I know will be where I live when they get here.

Not everyone is rich or lucky enough to see a movie in the cinema. Maybe in New York the tickets are cheap, but in my country, to see a film, you need to pay a lot. When I say lot, I mean one ticket’s price is about the price of two-three days of food here. It’s always so easy to speak up, but in the end, you shouldn’t judge others for leaking certain films, because you don’t know their life situations.

I watch films online. A lot. And I don’t feel bad about it, at all.

I’m not judging, I was responding to a specific talking point. I did preface it by mentioning if you have eventual access to it, and that should include financial — though I’m dubious that anyone should have access to stolen films if they can’t afford it. There are other hobbies out there.

That’s the case sometimes where I am, too. And if not, there are DVD releases. I can’t pay to see everything in a theater, either, but that’s not the only legal option.
