LA critics will deliver their veredict on the year of film on SUNDAY.

    Please share your predictions!

I’m still struggling in some categories, but so far these are my guesses:

Best Film – La La Land (could just as well be Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea. A different film would be a surprise)
Best Director – Damien Chazelle (again, Lonergan and Jenkins could happen. I doubt they’d repeat the NYFCC La La Land/Jenkins split).
Best Actor – Casey Affleck (do critics even have an alternative? Lol. Edgerton, Mortensen and Adam Driver if they want to be different. Denzel I doubt has a shot.)
Best Actress – Emma Stone (obviously could also be Huppert. I can see Sonia Braga for Aquarius being a surprise here)
Best Supporting Actor – they like to go crazy here sometimes, so John Goodman (or Issei Ogata for Silence)
Best Supporting Actress – Viola Davis
Best Screenplay – Manchester by the Sea (Toni Erdmann as a surprise)
Best Foreign Language Film – Toni Erdmann (Elle, Neruda and Aquarius are alternatives)
Best Documentary – O.J.: Made in America or I Am Not Your Negro
Best Animated Feature – The Red Turtle
    Best Score – Jackie
Best Editing – Moonlight or La La Land
Best Cinematography – La La Land (Silence?)
Best Production Design – The Handmaiden or Arrival

It is frustrating that critics are letting Affleck sweep. His Oscar nomination was already on lock, they should back up someone else and I am hoping it will be Mortensen. He was so good in that movie to miss out on a nomination. And LAFCA seems the place for this, they were the ones behind the rightful Best Actor winner Fassbender last year.

I think Huppert will also be their winner in Actress category

Supporting Actress is probably between Williams and Harris

Supporting Actor is up for grabs me thinks, so I am just gonna go with Ali here.

Best Film will obviously be La La Land, cause hey let’s predict Oscars instead of having our own voice.

I wonder if they would go for Billy Crudup for Supporting Actor for both Jackie and 20th Century Women. It’d be interesting to say the least and so out there.

Barry Jenkins is not winning Directing at LAFCA. If you really know LAFCA and the members in that group, you wouldn’t even entertain the idea of a Barry Jenkins win. Not happening. There is a huge difference between NY critics and LA ctitics. Go check their awards histories and LA members opinions on what New Yorkers always choose.

Damien Chazelle is the one sure lock there.

Yep LAFCA pride themselves in being different from NYFCA. We’ll see a repeat winner here and there, but for the most part I’m expecting obscure, yet deserving winners. (Adam Driver come thru)

Adam Driver seems like a National Society of Film Critics type winner more than an LA choice. I could see the NSFC even choosing ” Paterson” for best picture or director.
