Just wondering people’s opinions about whether or not Louise Fletcher’s Oscar win was a shoo in. Isabelle Adjani had won several awards for “The Story of Adele H” and likely was a big contender. Ann-Margret also received her second nomination …this time for “Tommy”. Carol Kane (Hester Street) and Glenda Jackson (Hedda) probably didn’t really stand a chance. Thoughts? With the popularity of the film, and her great performance, I am thinking Louise Fletcher likely won by a lot.

Fletcher was a very heavy favorite. Kane and Jackson indeed didn’t have a prayer, Tommy was way too offbeat to win a major Oscar and Adjani was hurt by her film being snubbed in Foreign Language Film.

She was the favorite. Such a horrible category. Imo, one of the worst wins ever. She did absolutely nothing in the role. But she did give the best Oscar speech ever!

According to that Inside Oscar book Ellen Burstyn started a movement this year to eliminate the Best Actress category this year out of protest for the lack of good roles for women.

Louise Fletcher was not too happy about this idea. (I always thought it was interesting then that Fletcher sort of took over for Burstyn in Exorcist 2)

There was worry this year that no they couldn’t find 5 actresses to fill out the category. Odd how one of my favorite performances ever: Katharine Ross in The Stepford Wives didn’t get any attention.

Funny Lady with Barbra Streisand as well as Shampoo (Julie Christie/Goldie Hawn) were also released that year.
