I had the opportunity to see Mad Max: Fury Road again this weekend and couldn’t stop thinking about how great Charlize Theron was. The film currently has 97% in the rotten tomatoes, more than 12 Years a Slave, Argo, Birdman, and on par with Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. It has a B+ from audiences and already #25 on the IMDB’s top 250 movies of all time. This film reminds me of The GrandBudapest Hotel, where everyone was underestimating it and it ended with multiple nominations. And if the genre is the problem, Avatar, Gravity, E.T, and District 9 all got nominations.

Can Mad Max: Fury Road and Charlize Theron get Oscar nominations this year ?

That would be nice. It’s in the running for stunts, and other tech nominations; maybe costume. It certainly deserves a film Editing nod as well but…..and no for Charlize. She was stellar in Snow White and The Huntsman and we all know what happened there.

Yes, but Snowwhite and the huntsman didn’t get great reviews. Plus critics like Pete Hammond are praising Charlize in Mad Max: Fury Road saying; “If there is any justice Charlize Theron will get an Oscar nomination. And so will the movie”.

True. But Snow White did get two Oscar nods and really, would it have been even half as watchable without the multi-talented Theron? I dont want to believe this but, the genre(s) is going to work against her again. And the “If” part about justice….well…..lol. Uh-huh.

Charlize Theron is not happening. The category is stacked. If it were a weaker year, she would have had a chance.

I am predicting Fury Road for a picture and direction nods though. What the movie needs to get those is a GG best drama nomination imo.

Now imagine Fury Road winning best picture. I know it’s not gonna happen in a million years, but just imagine how awesome that would be.

A Director nod for the iconic George Miller isnt all that incredulous imo. A big thank you George perhaps? A win? I dont think so. But perhaps that’s because I’m fairly ‘jaded’ by the voters behind the big Golden dickless statue.

I think the film and perhaps George will feature here and there during the circuit though. That wont hurt.

Sandra Bullock got in for Gravity and Sigourney Weaver got in for Aliens. I find Charlize’s performance a lot stronger than both of those.

So happy to see the criminally underrated Theron getting her own thread! She deserves some kind of official recognition for what she manages to pull off in the film.

Major nods for Mad Max will be tough. If some contenders fail like last year we could see a Grand Budapest style resurgence of buzz for Fury Road, but it will still be hard to get over the sci-fi/action biases.

Though Fury Road is considered great film (for me its solid) better movies of similar type/genre have failed to get major nominations, so even if this so far weak year i think that BP nomination is very long shot. As for Theron, she was definitley the best part of the movie both because she gave wonderful performance and because Hardys Max was underwriten. I still think she wount be nominated because of type of movie she is in and because, unlike many other years there are enough legit Best Actress contenders to push her out.

There’s the one exception. And she is phenomenal in Aliens. Alien as well. Gravity is merely a workplace accident caused by a fool and no sci-fi.

If Theron is nominated, I’ll fall off my barstool. Not that I would mind that.

I think everyone is underestimating Theron. Warner Brothers is going to be pushing for this.

Theron would make an excellent and very deserving nominee. I would much prefer see her over some generic miscast performance from JLaw from another bound to be awful David O. Russell film.

Mad Max really needs to be campaigned hard. Action genre films really deserve attention outside the tech categories at the Oscars.

Fury Road, but it will still be hard to get over the sci-fi/action
    biases.

Regarding the film, I also can’t see anything beyond the
lesser technical nominations. It’s the fourth film and third sequel in
the franchise combined with a post-apocalyptic dystopian society action
genre. That doesn’t bode well on several counts. Huge box office doesn’t
    do much by itself.

Best picture and best director nominations
often go hand in hand. Regarding George Miller, his directing resume
isn’t very strong. Right or wrong, the director nominations and
especially the award are usually influenced by their past directing
credits in addition to the currently eligible film. There are exceptions
but not often and it takes something more than an unlikely Fury Road.
