All below-the-line categories are now active in the Oscar prediction center (Production Design, Cinematography, Costumes, Makeup, Visual Effects, Score, Editing and now Sound Mixing and Sound Editing), and I keep trying to figure out just how big a contender “Mad Max” will be, and I find myself predicting it in six categories. That’s a lot for a film not to be up for Best Picture, though “Insterstellar” did manage five without anything above the line.

How many craft noms do you think “Mad Max” will get, and do you think that will translate to broad enough support for Best Picture?

    I think it’ll get:

    Makeup
    Costume Design
    Cinematography
    Sound Editing/Mixing
    Production Design
    Visual Effects
    Film Editing

If it can land all these, I can imagine it igniting enough passion for Best Picture or even Best Director. Even if it doesn’t get in for Best Picture, they might still recognize the man who made the film happen because I mean, Close Encounters of the Third Kind didn’t get in for Best Picture, but it still was included in plenty other areas, including Director.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind would have made an expanded lineup.

All of this, and hopefully some kind of citation for George.

I also think it will WIN Stunts.

Interstellar was not as well received as Mad Max. Mad Max is still one of the best films of the year with a 97% in the tomatometer and 89 in Metacritic.

    I’m betting on the following:

    1. Best Cinematography
    2. Best Production Design
    3. Best Film Editing
    4. Best Costume Design
    5. Best Visual Effects
    6. Best Sound Mixing
    7. Best Sound Editing
    8. Best Makeup and Hairstyling
    9. Best Original Score

    And Maybe

    1. Best Picture
    2. Best Director: George Miller
    3. Best Actress: Charlize Theron

I am predicting 3 nominations – Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects. (To be honest, I hated this movie and will remain forever puzzled as to why others like it so much! This is a matter of taste. I beliieve, actually know, that my taste is closer to a majority of academy members rather than Gold Derbyites). I might be underestimating it; the reason I never win the Oscar prediction contest is because I always seem to get 4 out of 5 in technical nominations, and wind up with 82% each year!

Why do you think you get 4 out of 5? Is it because you let personal preference cloud your judgement? That happened to me last year when I had a hunch that Selma would get a Best Picture nomination BUT NOTHING ELSE except for song of course, but I would up not following my instincts, just because I was so annoyed by how overrated it was being.

I’m sure the reason is that I don’t see enough of the franchise type movies that get nominations for sound, visual effects, etc. So I wind up guessing. And also, when I really don’t like a film it’s hard to wrap my brain around the fact that the various branches might admire the work. And also: the branches have their favorites, their friends, who they vote for and I am not always privvy to that information (:

    Right now I’d say 4:

    Visual Effects
    Sound Mixing
    Sound Editing
    Makeup

I might change my mind to 6 and add Cinematography & Editing, but I weirdly don’t feel like it’ll get in for Production Design and Costumes.

    I currently have

    Best Cinematography
    Best Costume Design
    Best Film Editing
    Best Makeup and Hairstyling
    Best Production Design
    Best Original Score
    Best Sound Editing
    Best Sound Mixing
    Best Visual Effects

So 9. But I doubt it will actually get that many and once I have seen some other major contenders (The Revenant, Star Wars, The Hateful Eight), I may end up moving it out of some. But I would be ecstatic if these current predictions were right.

9 nods in the tech awards? Esentially all of them?

    That’s highly unlikely.

I have it for 7, which is I guess still too optimistic, but I just can’t fin a reason why it can’t have them all:

    Editing / Cinematography / PD / SM / SEd / VFX  / M&H

And I don’t see it claiming such many tech nods without a corresponding BP nod. I don’t know of any movie that has had 6 or more tech nominations without a nomination in BP….

    Probably: Makeup, Sound Editing
    Possibly: Sound Mixing, Visual Effects
Longshot: Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing

But 2-4 nominations sounds like the most probable outcome, though. I don’t necessarily think voters are terribly eager to embrace it even if many of them quite like it.
