Wow. No J. Edgar. Biggest snub for a film that was supposed to win BP a couple months ago. How SAD!!!

Do they nominate five or three? In any case, I’d rank their chances like so:
    1. The Iron Lady – as opposed to J. Edgar, received consistently positive reviews and added (rather than detracted) to the performances
    2. Anonymous – this is very showy period work, and I would think the branch is likely to positively respond; it’s challenge was making the finalist list
    3. The Artist – more likely to get in on the basis of hairstyling; film is expected to hit big with all branches of the Academy
    4. Hugo – may snag that #3 spot, by a nose
    5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 – HP has just had such an overall cool reception this season that I don’t see it happening
    6. Albert Nobbs – period hairstyling will win it some points; makeup effects for Close are likely a tad too subtle for this branch, especially in comparison to what was done for Streep

(I haven’t seen/heard of Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life… but I suppose since it made the list it stands as good a shot as any of making the final lineup)

Albert Nobbs featured prosthetics work by Oscar winner Matthew W. Mungle; Hugo boasts multiple Academy award nominees and winners amongst the makeup crew.  I expect these to be two of the three nominees (my guess for the third slot is either Iron Lady or Harry Potter, which share a number of the same makeup crew)…

I also think The Iron Lady wins this one with the other 2 nominees being Anonymous (which has some amazing technical work and could end up with 3-4 nominations or none at all) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (it’s the most widely seen contender and the makeup work in the film is very impressive).
