Manchester by the Sea has the most precursor awards for Original Screenplay and La La Land pulled a big win at the Globes for Best Screenplay. I think Hell or High Water could pull a big win here (ala Thelma & Louise) but your guess is as good as mine. Which is your favorite Screenplay to win the Oscar? Who will actually win?

I think Bafta and especially WGA will be very telling which screenplay is in front to win the Oscar. La La Land won a few critics awards next to Critic Choice and Globe, but both Hell and High Water and especially Manchester By the Sea were the frontrunner.

Personally I want Manchester By the Sea to win, but – even though I dont like the last 1/3 – a win for The Lobster would be a beautiful upset.

I liked The Lobster, but Manchester is my personal favorite to win. I thought the screenplay was one of the weaker parts of La La Land and was frankly bamboozled by the win, but whatever it takes for LLL to scoop up as many awards as possibly, right? Sad!

If Hell or High Water wins as a wildcard, though, that’d be fine by me.

La La will win. Manchester can’t even with with Casey Affleck. Why would it win anything else at this point especially against a sweeper like La La?

Why would Casey Affleck not winning automatically mean Manchester won’t win screenplay? Both were considered out-front for a long time, but if one falls doesn’t necessarily mean the other will. For the record, I am predicting LLL in Screenplay, but not for anything to do with Casey.

    My personal ranking:

    1. The Lobster
    2. Manchester By the Sea
    3. Hell or High Water
    4. La La Land

If Manchester doesn’t even have the support to win it’s supposed “lock” against Denzel, then it is not going to have the support to beat the BFCA-GG screenplay winner La La Land.

But Casey Affleck never was really considered a “lock” for the win. Not by sensible people anyway, even if they did have him at the top of their predictions. Early on in the season I thought Manchester would be stronger in Original Screenplay than in Actor, and I might come back to that view if it wins WGA.
