It is really early but should “Black Panther” remain the most critically acclaimed comic book film of all time it could do well at the critics awards, and then Oscar voters will have to take notice just as they did with genre fare like “Get Out” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”.

In theory you would be right, but my issue with that is that critics had their chances to do so with Logan and The Dark Knight, but didn’t. I doubt they will actually put their money where their mouths are with Black Panther.

Okay I haven’t seen the movie yet but here’s my thing, I’m sure its great but it almost seems like a superhero movie these days is either really bad (i.e. Justice League) or amazing. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard “Marvel’s Best” or even “The Genre’s Best”

Wonder Woman, Logan, Deadpool, Civil War, Avengers 1, The Dark Knight, all films that were praised for being the “best of their genre” or “an awards contender.” People even said Ragnarok was one of Marvel’s best

Basically, what I’m saying is, the whole “not a regular superhero movie, a really good one” is not all that uncommon. That’s why I’m skeptical Black Panther’s buzz lasts until December, especially with Infinity War just around the corner.

I wanted to start a discussion on this highly anticipated comic-book film. The teaser trailer was released, and fans, as well as non fans became hype. I will say that the land looked a bit fake, but I do believe they will add their finishing touches to the CGI. Wakanda is honestly protected by the women, who are all soldiers themselves.

    Lets talk Marvel’s Black Panther!!!

Yep, I’d say that’s my biggest concern. As a complete and total NON fan of CGI the amount of computer generation that seems to be going on in this film (without having seen it) scares me a little. Based on what I’ve seen in the trailers they shot a LARGE percentage of this thing on soundstages with blue and/or green screen – and that would be a shame because Africa is easily one of the most beautiful continents on this planet. Hopefully we get to see some of it in the actual movie..

Yes, watching the trailer, the CGI didn’t look good at all and certainly not to the level of other Marvel films. I’m expecting this film to follow a similar route that Beauty and the Beast had in which is was a massive box office success but come Oscar season, it will be forgotten for the most part. With a lot more superhero films coming out this year, I think genre fatigue will also hurt its chances.

I don’t see how this would be comparable to Beauty and the Beast. That movie was hardly acclaimed. And yes, the race card and social commentary will help, especially if are no contenders with a primary black cast. But it’s far too early to know what its awards future will be.

its super hero fatigue … there are far too many for anyone to get traction … in a year where Logan, wonder woman and Thor were all out and could have maybe had some attention they all ended up overshadowing each other and logan was the only one to get any nomination. plus when there are so many people arent as passionate about them … back when TDK came out people had passion because it was the only good superhero movie … now we have 5-6 a year

I think the film will get Oscar noms for Best Costume Design and Best Supporting Actor, Michael B. Jordan.
The buzz for his performance is pretty crazy, and he was robbed for “Creed”. He’s also a new star that Hollywood is hungry to elevate.

Been hearing that too. People have been saying he’s the best comic book movie villain since Heath Ledger’s Joker which almost made me fall off my chair.. Looking forward to seeing how this situation develops..

Besides Ledger, there’s a very low bar for villains in comic book movies, especially for the MCU so Jordan being the best might not mean much.

I just left a screening. It’s a very good (but not great) film. It’s on par with Nolan’s Batman Begins and Wonder Woman. The highs are incredibly high, but their are some really slow moments too. The performances are what people are going to talk about, especially Letitia Wright. This girl is going to be a star.

The movie really pulls you in and makes you invest in these characters. The hype is a bit overrated of course (people should lower their expectations just a bit), but it really is terrific overall. Potential Oscar recognition for Costume design (a shoo in), Original Score and art direction. I can also maybe see GG noms for Jordan and Wright.

The previews made me fall in love with Letitia
