I was wondering what you all thought of
    this performance.

Watching it today it struck me how restrained she is and yet very layered.
The character clearly is torn between her duties as a lawyer and what her
personal beliefs are. There are several times throughout the trial that you can
    see this in Mary’s performance.

I have always been a big fan of hers and think to an extent she is underrated.
She has always turned in stellar performances from Parenthood to What’s Eating
Gilbert Grape. And I am completely happy with her Oscar win for Melvin and
    Howard.

I might have nominated her in 93 for Philadelphia or Gilbert. The nominees
    were:

    Anna Paquin, The Piano
    Holly Hunter, The Firm
Emma Thompson, In the Name of the Father
    Rosie Perez, Fearless
Winona Ryder, The Age of Innocence

I would replace either Emma or Holly with Mary for either film. She was also
very good in Marilyn Hoytchkiss’ Ballroom Dance and Charm School a not very
seen film but still a good one!

She would have been a fine nominee. The problem with Philidelphia is that Tom Hanks overshadows everyone. Even Denzel Washington’s brilliant performance was overlooked. As for the other nominees in Steenburgen’s cateogry, I would have replaced her with either Hunter or Perez. Perhaps there may have been vote splitting, but I guess we’ll never know.

Absolutely worthy of a nomination and would have preferred to see Washington as the Lead nominee from that film..

I suppose there could have been vote splitting.

However, I was happy with Perez’s nomination. I love that film and her performance
