So, apparently there is an effort by Star Wars fans to have Meryl Streep be cast as Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX, now that Lucasfilm has confirmed that Carrie Fisher will not be brought back using CGI, despite permission being granted by Fisher’s family.
Um… what do you think of this?January 19, 2018 at 7:19 am #1202470792
I think first choice for Princess Leia, Sissy Spacek, should do it.January 19, 2018 at 7:27 am #1202470796
Yeah, Sissy auditioned for that role so did Carrie for Carrie White.
It would be fun to see Spacek as Leia.January 19, 2018 at 8:22 am #1202470839

Yes, they both auditioned for Carrie and Leia on the same day, at the same time.
Meryl would make sense because of Postcards From the Edge and she’d be able to nail her voice as well.
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about recasting though. A part of me feels they’ll do CGI anyway, and they’re just going to wait a while before they reveal that.
If there is backlash on social media it would be disrespectful to the family because they care about her legacy. This is how they wanted it to continue. Also, Billie is in the movie.
If they get Meryl, then use Carrie as a force ghost in the end or something (That could be confusing, but whatever) then I’d be fine.

Personally, I would hope they would just say something like “Oh Leia is at the base blah blah blah” and then have them find out she died after they eventually defeat Kylo and the dark side (lets say she smiles and dies like luke) and then use a CGI to make her a force ghost next to Luke, Obi Wan, Yoda, Anakin, Padame and Han….maybe ghost Kylo as well if they kill him off and he has a darth vader-like turn around.January 19, 2018 at 10:35 am #1202470980
I think the movie will do a significant time jump and she will just have passed away … or it will open on her funeral

I don’t know if I like the idea of her being recast. Honestly the cgi wouldn’t bother me as much. I thought it worked just fine in rogue one. If she has to be miscast I guess Streep is probably the best choice. Don’t like Spacek for it though.January 19, 2018 at 11:12 am #1202471018
Are they suggesting Meryl Streep because of Postcards from the Edge?January 19, 2018 at 11:28 am #1202471027
That sounds awesome!January 19, 2018 at 12:59 pm #1202471116
Streep would be too distracting. I don’t think they should recast. Maybe if they do a time jump they can have someone order, but not someone Fisher’s age. Let the character go with Fisher.January 19, 2018 at 2:32 pm #1202471151
I really doubt Streep would do it. She seemed to remain close to Fisher. (She mentioned it in her Globe speech last year that she had lost her voice in “lamentation”. Fisher’s funeral was a few days before. I guess she spoke at it.)
I think she’d see it as disrespectful to Fisher’s memory.
