This is a totally new and (perhaps) crazy thought, but my father and me got to talking about the past Oscar hosts, and we both enjoy watching the Academy Awards. He is also a fan of this site and likes reading the various topics.

We thought it would be a cool idea if Meryl Streep hosted the Oscars, starting out as herself. And then throughout the ceremony she introduced each of the categories and presenters in her different nominated characters (eg Julia Child, Miranda Priestly, Francesca Johnson). It could be a lot of fun, and she has such a diverse range of characters that it could work. Of course, not all her characters would work (Sophie might be a bit too dramatic) but what do you guys think? And yes, I know I am a self-proclaimed Meryl fan, but I assure you this is not just me being a fanboy- I truly think audiences would eat it up. And considering the Oscars are always looking for different ways to present their top honors, this is just something we thought would be special.

    Thoughts?

Probably not. Meryl Streep is not conceted enough to plug her Oscar-attracting ability. Plus, I don’t see how bringing Sophie out would make a good hosting gig. I think it would just make everyone cry.

I wouldnt mind seeing her come out with her head twisted backwards. Some other funny images come to mind, but I dont think Streep would do it.

That would be interesting, though I don’t think people will be well affiliated with some of her past roles. Maybe she can play other famous Oscar winning roles that people would know off the bat.
Unfortunately though I see no case scenerio of her ever hosting ANY event.

    Umm, hell to the NO!

And, as TV12 already pointed out, Meryl is not conceited enough to pull such a stunt, so we never ever have to worry about it happening.

I don’t see whats conceted about her presenting the categories in her different characters. Plenty of people would have fun with it. And its not like this idea is as bad as James Franco and Anne Hathaway being MCs (oh wait, they actually were!) Anyways it was just a thought.

I think it would be fabulous for Meryl to host the Oscars but she’ll never do it. A medley of her greatest hits sounds demeaning to me and probably to her as well. Meryl doesn’t mind presenting so we’ll have to be content with that.

I think it’d be a trainwreck and more ammo for the Streep haters. As Puce said above, thankfully we’ll NEVER have to worry about it happening.

Wow this was the wrong place to post this. I’ve suggested this in other arenas and people loved the idea. Oh well, can’t please everybody.

For any idea, there will be some positive and negative reactions to it. If you are posting this just that people will fawn over your idea, that shouldn’t be the case

Anyway, I do think it is a fun idea. But like others have stated before me, Meryl Streep is not the type who would agree to doing these kinds of hostings or performing. Even in the Oscars, she has never agreed to present a category. The only times she has ever been on stage is when she is presenting a clip or a honorary award. And I do agree, some characters are just too obscure or not fun enough for them to be presented on stage.

Jason.. I love your personal videos..but this idea is simply ridiculous!!!  LOL
Meryl is quite capable of being a great oscar host as “Simply Streep”

She turned down the offer to sing a few verses of “Mamma Mia!” so that’s doubtful she would ever host, especially in such a demanding, yet creative and fun way.

Yeah, I love Meryl as much as you, Jason, but this is… just too much.
A funny idea, yes, but impossible in reality.
She’s just not that type. I’m pretty sure the Academy has asked her more than once to host and she denied. She likes to present an honory award or introduce to in memorian, as we all knew. That’s what she likes to do and it’s good.
I mean it’s not even sure that she’ll be presenting best actor next year. I’m hopeful, but she has never done that before at Oscars.

^All the more reason to hope she gets in for Hope Springs. She’ll attend the ceremony and sort of be very obligated to present Lead Actor then. And, of course, she should get in because it’s a great performance.

Jason, I’m not gonna tear down your idea. I think she would be ridiculed for it. BUT…I honestly hope she is given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the end of her career. And I hope that maybe they’ll do an entire ceremony devoted to her, showing clips from all of her Oscar nominated roles. Seventeen as of today, hopefully in the 20s by then. I mean I think she deserves an 18th for Hope Springs and on paper, nothing looks more Oscar worthy than August: Osage County, so there’s 19. Ahh how exciting.

And bring us some more videos!

^ That reminds me, I hated how they treated Elizabeth Taylor last year. Yes, it was probably the most beautifully made In Memoriam segment, but whenever LEGENDS like her pass away, you wish and hope there’s a little more than a mere 3 second clip to honor their life. I just wish they celebrate some of the greats that departed in a more prolonged, and thus more touching, heartfelt way. Bring out the stars to speak about them, make it more personal. The last time this happened was probably Julia Roberts doing a clip for Katherine Hepburn. Damn the ratings, or the time. You’re doing this once a year, so a couple more minutes won’t hurt.
