Plain and simple. “Sophie’s choice” is a benchmark against which all other brilliance in acting is measured.

She’s one of the best for five decades.

Her best may be the 80’s, but my favorite are the 90’s (plus somehow the 00’s and 10’s combined).
Must be another record that now the majority of her noms are after her 40th birthday.

I’d like to believe her ‘best’ works are still ahead of her……and topping herself after A Cry in the Dark, Sophie’s Choice, Bridges of Madison County, etc etc et al, well, if anyone can do this it’s Meryl.

All of Judi Dench’s 7 nominations came after her 63rd birthday.

One note; You forgot The Devil Wears Prada ;). But even though she was fantastic in all decades, the 80s are her most impressive. The 2000s are her most fun

    I think I agree.

Danny Boy ….. This Is Sophie’s Choice !!!

If You are Going to Put a Gun on My Head ….. It Should Be 2000s !!!

WHY ??? ….. This Was When ….. The Streep RENAISSANCE ….. Happened !!!

    Very Close 2nd  ….. 1980s  !!!

    UNFAIR Though For ….. 1970s & 2010s ….. Not a Full Decade Reckoning !!!

    Potential 2010s UPSET ….. When 3rd Took Place and IF 4th & 5th Oscar WIN Happens !!!

Wow, I recently thought about it, really! I think years of 1990s are usually thought as her weakest, despite the fact that she scored 4 Oscar nominations and 8 (!) Golden Globe noms back then. Yet there’s no doubt that it’s between 1980s and 2000s. There’s gotta be 1980s but we wouldn’t be talk about it without her work in 2000s.

Yet, in terms of purely personal preference, I’d go with 1990s on behalf of her work on “Death Becomes Her” and “River Wild”.

Definitely the 80’s!!! Her iconic performances in Sophie’s Choice, Africa and Cry in the Dark put her on top!!!

All of them???? Wow, okay I didn’t know that.
Still Meryl’s are also impressive. (and she has still 3 more than Dench)

Nowadays I freaking despise her as a performer. She makes me wanna puke every time I see her on a screen doing her usual schtick. But what she has achieved in the eighties is abso-fuckin-lutely outstanding. Her performances during that era were top-notch. Pure brilliance. She was also very good during the nineties. But when 2000s and especially 2010s came she has become absolutely unbearable.
