If you had to choose between those two roles to give Meryl her 3rd Oscar, which would you choose?
Yes, there were a bunch of roles before that that could have gotten her one, but she lost for all of them. Now if she had lost for Iron Lady as well, she could have had a chance to win this year. But would you rather have that happen, or let what came to pass stand?

Both years among my personal nominees she ranks third (2011 my winner is Swinton and runner-up is Theron, 2013 my winner is Blanchett and runner-up is Roberts) and among the actual nominees for me she ranks first in 2011 and second in 2013.

So, The Iron Lady. Even though I think A:OC is a better performance.

    ^Totally agreed.

Her A:OC performance is better, but her Iron Lady competition was much weaker.

‘The Iron Lady’. I think it’s the better performance of the two. Also, she would’ve at least been a nominee for me the year she won for ‘The Iron Lady'(#5), but this year she doesn’t make the cut.

I’m in the camp that thinks August: Osage County is the superior performance (it is, in my humble opinion, far more challenging to create an original character rather than emulate an already existing person, though I recognize both are challenging).

But she’s just not better than Blanchett or Dench imo. For The Iron Lady, her only real competition was a supporting performance trying its luck in the leading category.

Where’s the “Neither” option? She should have won her 3rd for Evil Angels or Adaptation.

She should have much more than three.

The Iron Lady.  It was a terrible film, but Meryl’s performance was spectacular.  She was flawless in her persona of Thatcher.  I enjoyed August Osage County, but she was part of a bigger ensemble, whose dynamics were integral to the performance.  In Iron, it was all about her.

If the Devil Wears Prada came out this year She would be my pick to win.  just incredible acting.  actually if Doubt came out THIS year…and hadn’t already won for Iron Lady….she would have beaten Blanchett

I want to know why the SAGs picked THAT clip for Meryl’s August: Osage County performance- seriously, they had a million other scenes they could have selected, where you could really see the fire of the character come to life, in particular where Streep shuts Julia Robert’s daughter up lol- that was awesome!

She was beyond a tour de force in The Iron Lady. I never gave in to this Viola Davis ‘buzz’ or competition that particular year, because I’m one of the few that thinks Davis’s role in The Help was a supporting one, and she should have campaigned accordingly. Streep was mesmerizing in The Iron Lady, and I’m so glad she won the Oscar for that role. I’m hoping it won’t be long before her fourth.

    Adaptation would have been nice.

I think her A:OC performance is much better than her Iron Lady performance. I’m also in the minority for thinking that it’s the best female performance this year (that’s nominated).

I feel like they only used the clips that were released from the trailers. I saw the fish and makeup scenes online before the film was released.

Haha I remember people saying back in 2011 that they hope Meryl loses so she can win for A:OC. Now that I saw the performance, I will say I am relieved she won her third for Iron Lady. She was great as Violet, but nowhere near on the same level as Cate Blanchett.

There were many great female performances in 2011, but I don’t believe any touched Meryl’s (Even though the film was dreadful.)

She should have four Oscars: Kramer Vs Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Cry in the Dark, and Iron Lady.
