I know there is all talk for Fassbender for lead actor in Shame and A Dangerous Method, but what about his riveting supporting performance in Jane Eyre? It could be considered a lead, but since he is only in portions of the movie he could easily be given a well-deserving supporting nod. Aside from Christopher Plummer, there seem to be only a few other male supporting turns that really jump out at this point.October 21, 2011 at 4:20 pm #41952
Focus already has Christopher Plummer/Beginners for this category. Since Fassbender has virtually no chance for a nomination for this, and it would get in the way of their Plummer campaign, it seems unlikely they will make any effort beyond listing him as a “for your consideration” possibility in any full cast/crew ads and their screener wrapping.October 21, 2011 at 4:22 pm #41953
He’s got no chance in either category for “Jane Eyre,” but strictly in terms of the performance, it would be a reasonable designation. Personally, I consider him a lead in the film, but he has significantly less screentime than Mia Wasikowska, and everyone in the film to one degree or another supports her.October 21, 2011 at 4:29 pm #41954
He was ‘better’ than Mia. I’m surprised he didnt have one milky eye as a physical manifiestation of his angst. He can add this one to his resume, which helps prop up his other roles.October 21, 2011 at 4:34 pm #41955
That’s a shame. Hopefully, his later lead actor turns this year will remind people of this early-in-the-year performance. Focus should take advantage of the fact that campaigning for a nod in this category would only bring more attention to the film (which, for me, is probably my favorite released film I’ve seen this year). Escpecially, if it starts talk of the potential of him getting two nominations (whether it’s likely or not). As we know, journalist love to give press to that possibility!October 21, 2011 at 4:39 pm #41956
there’s definitely logic to what you say, but there is also a counterargument.
Focus clearly doesn’t want to help Fassbender’s chances for being nominated or winning best actor. They’ve got their own solid contender – Gary Oldman/Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – and if reminding voters that Fassbender had a solid year and increases his chances for Shame could hurt their own candidate for lead actor.October 21, 2011 at 4:54 pm #41957
He’s listed officially as Leading Actor on the Focus Features FYC site.October 22, 2011 at 6:42 am #41958
For people to consider Michael’s work in Jane Eyre for a nomination, is testimony to the 4 diverse roles he played in the films that he has released this year. I loved him as Rochester, but as it has already been noted, Focus will focus on someone else for Best & Supporting Actors. I believe Fox Searchlight will do a great job in promoting him for Best Actor for Shame. Him receiving a nomination for that will be a milestone in the industry and for his career.October 22, 2011 at 3:24 pm #41959
Fassbender is one of those actors who could split his own vote, but if he plays his cards right, it might actually work to his advantage. Right now, his performance in “Shame” is the one that seems to have the most traction. He’s already probably a strong contender for critics awards, but the great thing about the critics is that they often award one actor for multiple performances, so having “A Dangerous Method” and “Jane Eyre” in his back pocket means critics can award three performances for the price of one. (Ditto Jessica Chastain in the supporting race.) If that helps him pick up momentum from the critics, it could help his chances for “Shame,” since Oscar voters can check off his name for that performance as a way of also honoring his work throughout the year.October 22, 2011 at 5:04 pm #41960
Exactly, as was said.
I dont think he’ll win though; very surprised if he should. But the nom is his. Step one for Fassbender imo.October 22, 2011 at 5:17 pm #41961
The key for Fassbender to be nominated is for him to win at least one of NY/LA/NS. If he doesn’t win any of these, his chances will be reduced to some degree.
My guess is that he will win at least one of these.October 22, 2011 at 5:18 pm #41962
I would love to see Fassbender nominated for the incredible work he’s done this year in such diverse roles as ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘X-Men: First Class’, ‘Shame’, and ‘A Dangerous Method’. I think ‘Shame’ is his best shot at a nom, and I hope he gets it. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about him in the role, but I’d nominate him regardless from all the other work he’s done.
P.S.- I know he’s being campaigned in Lead for ‘Jane Eyre’, but I personally saw him as Supporting. Regardless, he was very good.
