Can someone explain to me how these two performances were snubbed for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress? Outstanding performances and would have been better winners than the winners of that category (Geena Davis was the winner for 88′).

Definitely the best cast of 1988 and the film deserved more nominations than 1.

    What are your thoughts?

Comedy and horror often get overlooked.

Keaton was being heavily pushed that year for a Best Actor nomination for “Clean And Sober”

I love this movie. Scenes like the smoke oozing from Sylvia Sydney’s throat are all gems!

There were a couple of comedy contenders that year with Crichton for Fish/Wanda and Levinson for Working Girl in directing. Burton got squeezed out.
I don’t know who I’d replace for Keaton in supporting. Certainly not River Phoenix.
One thing’s for certain; ghost or no, I’d be scared of O’Hara’s “artistically challenged” character.

I’d forgotten this was the same year as The Accidental Tourist. That must have helped Geena Davis although I’m still surprised she won. That was one of those wins that seemed to come out of nowhere. She didn’t win any preliminary awards.

Her win makes sense because it’s category fraud. Weaver split her own vote. And the women of Dangerous Liaisons were criminally overlooked.
