He has been nominated 7 times and has won none. Do you think he should have won?

I would be hard-pressed to pick out just one movie as Leigh’s best work, but he certainly deserves to have won several Oscars by now. I mean, seriously–Diablo Cody has a fucking Oscar and Mike Leigh doesn’t?!

He was the best in the directing for Vera Drake, and the screenplays for Happy-go-lucky and Another Year. He’s amazing!

My pick is Happy-Go-Lucky. That film and the Screenplay is sublime!

Haven’t seen Another Year and need to see Topsy Turvy in full , but Secrets And Lies should have won something: It was such a great film.  When rewatching Vera Drake for my Best Actress profile of 2004, I was surprised at how much it didn’t work: None of the supporting characters were effective at all and I wish they had focused more on Staunton.  Staunton is great, but Winslet would have been my choice.  Happy Go Lucky is a movie I haven’t seen in a while, but I liked it when I saw it. Didn’t love it , but liked it.  I think Milk,  WAL-LE, and Frozen River were stronger choices in Screenplay though.

I read that when filming Vera Drake, none of the cast members playing Vera’s family knew that she was an abortionist until the police arrive at the house, and none of them, including Staunton, knew the police would come at all until it happened in the moment.

Mike Leigh’s scripts are difficult to assess in comparison to others as so much of the final result is from improvisation.

He was in tough in ’96 up agaist Fargo and in ’99 I was happy to see his nomination but against that lineup he  might have been last.

He may have had a shot in ‘2004, but the film (although perhaps not Imelda Staunton) was divisive. Spotless Mind would probably have been my choice.

2008 is another tough year for him. Personally I adored that unique screenplay from HgL but again, that film is divisive. He may have been last or near last.

I’m not entirely sure what I think of 2010. It has some beautiful performances, particularly from Lesley Manville, and it was BAFTA and Cannes nominated etc, but my sense was that, it had almost no chance for the win.

I respect Leigh’s work and would love to see him win one day. From all of his nominations I really cant choose one over another.

That’s part of what’s so great about him. It doesnt always work for everyone but I love that kind of risk.

I voted for Happy Go Lucky, but would have been happy with any of these wins.

Just look at the high degree of difficulty and the variations of content and tone involved in all of these projects! It is truly impressive.

Mike Leigh is the best at what he does.  His works are just sublimely detailed and thorough.  Yes, his screenplays stem from improvisation, but they are not improvised on screen.  He workshopped the materials with the actors during rehearsals, but by the time they are shooting, it’s all set, not a hair out of place.

His best Oscar chances were with Secrets and Lies, but ugh Fargo and the bigger ugh The English Patient were the juggernauts that year.

I generally don’t like Leigh’s films. I thought Vera Drake was torture to sit through and Another Year the cinematic equivalent of being punched in the face. Haven’t seen Topsy-Turvy. I will give him credit for his fantastic work with actors.

I did enjoy Secrets and Lies as well as Happy-Go-Lucky, so if forced to pick I would choose original screenplay for the latter. Though my choice was WALL-E.

My favorites of his films are Life Is Sweet and Naked, both awarded elsewhere but not Academy recognized.

My guess is he a near future Honorary Oscar recipient (he and James Ivory have to be considered prime UK-based director contenders).
