Not sure if one has been created for this yet. The trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODePHkWSg-U

After a misstep with Cars 2 and a polarizing reception to Brave, I think/hope that this is Pixar’s return to form. Monsters, Inc. was always one of my favorites from Pixar, so here’s hoping that this one not only lives up to the first, but maybe even becomes one of Pixar’s next truly great films (a la the Toy Stories, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Up).

It is (from what I am aware) Dan Scanlon’s Pixar directorial debut, let’s see if he lives up to the big boys like Stanton, Bird and Lasseter.

    Two reviews are out.

    Review #1
    Review #2

Both of these reviews indicate that this film appears to have met Pixar’s historical standards and that this prequel may have eclipsed the original Monsters, Inc. People called me crazy before, but it sounds like Pixar might have yet another Best Picture nom.

Pixar films are great. My ex always cried while watching Pixar films. The first  mosnter inc where he returns “Boo” was enough to have both of us crying (don’t judge me). Hopefully this one is great. It looks good.

More reviews have come in (but not yet a statistically significant amount), and there is a more mixed feeling about this film. There is now a distinct possibility that Pixar has created another Brave, not a Nemo, Up, or Ratatouille.

Fuck the ‘reviews’. I’ll see this in the theatre most likely. Hope it’s box office exceeds it’s expectations. But this director is unfamiliar to me, mostly. Seems like he’s a jack of all trades perhaps? We’ll see.

Only two major U.S. critics – Justin Chang of Variety and Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter – have reviewed this one so far. Chang gave a glowing review, McCarthy a mixed review. And with the exception of Up and the Toy Story films, McCarthy has never been particularly fond of Pixar films (I recall that the only aspect of Finding Nemo that he praised was the visuals).

Well, generally speaking, Justin Chang is my kind of reviewer.

I hope families are turned off of this movie because of stupid critics.

My prediction is this will be the #2 film of the summer worldwide, behind IM3. Pixar films and other animated films are doing great overseas irrespective of their quality, so this has a great shot.

Update: Just talked to someone who has seen MU. S/he thinks it plays too young to be that huge, and suggests Despicable Me could be the $1 billion WW hit.

Too young? Strange, since it is a college humor based movie.

Not sure what my source meant by young – also said male – might have meant it plays teen rather than kids; anyway, the point was Desp Me will have much wider appeal. This source is usually dead on. I know little about either movie myself.

Monsters University is at 63 on Metacritic with 30 reviews in. It is now locked into the 60s and will most certainly score less than Brave. Now might be the appropriate time to panic for anybody who is concerned about Pixar’s future.

Don’t panic just yet. They have several very interesting sounding original projects coming out in the next few years. I think they’ll rebound critically with at least one of those projects.

Not panic? If you take Pixar’s scores and ignore the Cars series and Brave you get an average Metascore of 88 with a standard deviation of 6. Monsters University is now 4 standard deviations from the mean (the probability of this happening randomly is 0.003167%). 2.5 standard deviations are the point where you should panic. 4 standard deviations are the point where you should start burning down the town. Pixar is dead.
