I think there are some excellent performances this year which are being underrated or ignored by most people and deserve some attention. In my opinion, some of those AMAZING performances are:
    * Jennifer Lawrence in mother! (easily her career-best)
    * Hugh Jackman in Logan (spectacular portrait of pain and sorrow)
    * Patrick Stewart in Logan (outstanding senile/depressed Charles Xavier, one of his best)
    * Kirsten Dunst in The Beguiled (amazingly restrained)

And you? What do you think that are the most underrated performances of the year?

Cicely Tyson in Last Flag Flying

After learning the government lied to Doc about the death of his son in the Middle East, three former Marines vow to tell the truth. This reaches a head as the men discuss a fellow Marine who died a quite unnecessary and painful death during their service decades prior. One convinces the other two men to visit the dead man’s surviving family to share the truthful details of his death.

They arrive at the small row house of Mrs. Hightower, played in a stunning cameo by the 92 year old legend Cicely Tyson. The three aging male actors (Bryan Cranston, Steve Carrell and Laurence Fishburne) have all previously been nominated for Oscars and are quite good in the film.

However, the moment Mrs. Hightower cracks her front door to greet her unexpected visitors, Tyson owns the screen. She is heart rendering while remembering her boy who died when his daughter was only four months old. Mrs. Hightower speaks of her son’s bravery in battle. She relates how her son’s widow remarried and moved far away. She haltingly acknowledges that she has never met her great grandchildren though she proudly displays their school photographs in her living room.

The men listen to her moving tale and grapple with their weakening determination to share the truth of the man’s death with his now infirmed and elderly mother.

Cicely Tyson is a national treasure and should be celebrated for her work here.
