Hansel and Gretel, Witch Hunters; Tommy Wirkola

    Lol!
Some eerie shots of witch persecution, the film easily earns an R rating. Despite the early Razzie shout-outs, I enjoyed the film for the most part. Watching Renner and Arterton together is an interesting partnership of sibling loyalites.
An odd mix of sets and costumes, with Tudor houses and yet, 14-17th Century clothing. O well.
These guys, are hoping for a fanchise. Good luck. Only, throw in some Warlocks while you’re at it. These witches, are really really bad. But, they’re all women.
A subtle improvement on Wirkola’s other efforts.

Brutal violence; I wasnt sure if I would make it past the initial few minutes. Very few surprises. One can see things ‘coming’.  The bad guys, are really really bad. I was expecting Penn to be wildly emotive. Given the character’s temper, I suppose it  fit. I forgot it was Sean.
Gosling and Ribisi are terrific. But, MVP for me, the very brief kitchen scene with Mireille Enos, as Connie,
Not much subtlety, but a lot of shooting killing and blowups. Still, it worked enough for me.

Movies seen in theaters this year:
    1. Gangster Squad: D+ it was just kind of awful, but not in a good way, and entirely uncreative. The script was bad and the action sequences (especially that car chase) were almost as poorly shot as the ones in Les Mis, but were without the emotional impact or excitement. I often had to stiffle laughter, especially at Sean Penn’s performance. Like what the hell even was that?? He’s a clearly worthy of a Worst Supporting Actor nomination, but unfortunately he’ll probably be forgotten by next December. Gosling and the rest were fine, and I agree with Babypook that Mireille Enos was good, even though she deserves much better material. The film might have been worth sitting through had Emma Stone been properly utilized, but instead, she was simply the damsel in distress with minimal screentime. So, overall, blegh. Oh. Also. SLOOOOW MOTIONNNNNNNNN BULLETSSSSS. Terrible. That is all.

    LOL Jack!
I’ve been accused of being a ‘soft’ grader and perhaps I am (I gave The Dictator an A-) because, if I can find even ONE good thing about the film, I’ll bump it up. Hence, the B+ for Argo (cast). Hahahaa!

    Parker, Taylor Hackford

Taylor appears to be on a bit of a roll these days, with  Love Ranch, (which I didnt think was THAT bad) and now Parker…whenever I go to a Jason Statham film, and I’ve seen every, single one,  I never ever go for the story, the director, or his costars. In this case, that could be a good thing.

With face-making villains, a screetchy Jennifer Lopez, and a script out of an alphagettios soup can, it’s an entirely forgettable collection of cliched violent nothingness. Lol.

Still, I give Lopez credit for keeping a straight face while she delivers her ‘big lines’. Chiklis is ok I guess, although, I kept seeing him as the Thing with skin. Nick Nolte, slumming it again, has a less gravelly voice than the one he unleashes upon us in Gangster Squad. At least he’s working. Clifton Collins Jr, may as well not have been in this.

As incredibly biased as this may seem, Statham, is the best thing about this, and as unintentionally hilarious that I found this, I enjoyed his characterization.   Imo, he elevates every film he’s in.
Cannot recommend unless you are in jail and have nothing else to do. But, that doesnt mean there werent things about the film that I didnt enjoy (Statham)

Meh. Tons of cliches, a few decent action sequences, and actors who actually play their roles with more in mind than a paycheck, it could’ve been worse. Much worse. Penn is completely ridiculous, and though I don’t think it’s  an awful performance, it’s definitely one of his lesser ones. Seems ridiculous now that he had some Oscar buzz for this last year. Best in show for me is Mireille Enos in an underwritten, thankless wife role as Josh Brolin’s wife. Brolin is solid, as is Ryan Gosling and Giovanni Ribisi, while Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Nick Nolte, and Michael Pena don’t even get real characters, but rather charicatures. Emma Stone is completely wasted as Penn and Gosling’s mol, but she sure looks fantastic in those 40s dresses! Not a terrible way to spend a few hours, but it’s certainly nothing new or nothing that requires any need to bring your brain along.
