This is tough, because there are very few modern films with ensembles where there should have been a nominee in EVERY  acting category.  I say this because most present day films do not have a true lead actress within them, they are all/mostly male centered.  The most recent, Silver Linings Playbook, did NOT deserve this honor, love DeNiro, and Weaver, but neither deserved a nomination.  I would not have nominated Cooper, but I do not begrudge his nomination; he almost made the cut for me.

American Beauty, is a good call with regard to recent films.  Shakespeare in Love as well, Joseph Fiennes was never honored properly.  Traffic could have, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

    American Beauty
    Shakespeare In Love
Chicago (Gere is a guilty pleasure)
Moonstruck (again, Cage is a guilty pleasure, but they love this movie for sure)
Howards End (add hopkins, bonham carter and samuel west)

P.S Network should’ve won all four acting oscar, if robert duvall was nominated in supporting
and Brando coul’ve win too for Streetcar. but Bogart is too big to resist

I think Shakespeare in Love is most deserving in recent years, in which great performances abound.  All who was needed is Joseph Fiennes, who was great.

“Sweet Bird of Youth” as Paul Newman missed Lead Actor, despite fantastic performance.

The Graduate.. i think William Daniels should have been nommed for sup. actor.
it is a rare feat. but in 1967 2 films were nominated in all 4 acting categories
BONNIE AND CLYDE…and  GUESS WHOS COMING TO DINNER.

Shakespeare in Love deserved a nom for Joseph Fiennes for best actor.
The Godfather Part II…Diane Keaton was amazing and shouldve been nominated for
best actress in such a weak year.
Sweet bird of Youth…only missing was Paul Newman who deserved a best actor nom.
Gone with The Wind…Thomas Mitchells’ supporting win was for Stagecoach..he was robbed of
                                       being nominated for GWTW.
Kramer vs Kramer–some can argue that Meryl Streep was the female lead of that film
Alexander was already nominated in supporting anyway..
Ordinary People— 2 terrible oversights…Donald Sutherland for best actor and Elizabeth
                                  McGovern for sup. actress.
Prizzi’s Honor– Kathleen Turner terrific and couldve been nominated for best actress
                             although a very tough year…

I just love all of the performances in Singin’ in the Rain. Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor definitely deserved nominations in Lead and Supporting, respectively, to go along with Jean Hagen’s nomination. Debbie Reynolds was nice, too, though I”m not sure how competitive Best Actress was that year.

    Witness For Prosecution:

    It got:
Best Actor: William Laughton got a very deserving nom
Best Supporting Actress: Elsa Lancaster got a not so deserved supporting actress nomination…
    Should’ve gotten:
Best Actress: Marlene Dietrich should have gotten a VERY deserving nomination in one of my favorite film performances
Best Supporting Actor: Tyrone Power was kind of a co-lead but I would be perfectly happy with him having gotten a nom here, especially considering that he unfortunately died like a year later

Hmmmm…well I mostly agree with every post so far in this thread;  although, I wouldnt expect some to win.
Sorry for the repeats but my favorites are:

    Network
    Bonnie and Clyde
    Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
    Cloud Atlas
    Wild at Heart

Will think about this as there are many others imo.

Agree with mentions of Sweet Bird of Youth, Gone With the Wind, Ordinary People, Prizzi’s Honor and Singin in the Rain (its a crime that Reynolds has only been nominated once).
