There have been 3 Movies that have swept the top 5 Oscars: It Happened One Night, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Silence Of The Lambs.   Were there any movies you thought deserved the 5 awards but didn’t win?  Did any of them come close?  Do you think that we’ll see another  movie do this in the near future or  is it just a matter of timing?

Yeah, American Beauty definitely came the closest to winning with Benning being overlooked in favor of Swank.

    Gone With the Wind.

Annie Hall (why not? Woody is at his neurotic best)

The Apartment. Jack was in tough that year against Lancaster but Shirley could have the win over Liz Taylor. C’mon.

Network: I do admire Rocky for it’s simplicity, roots, and it’s rah-rah feelgoodness, but Network would have been a very deserving winner of both Best Picture, and Best Director to the late great Sidney Lumet.

Million Dollar Baby: Wont debate the merits of the film but it did win 3/5. I was rooting for Clint that year over Jamie Foxx. The screenplay was deep and I agree with the winner, but a win for Haggis here would not have been unworthy imo.

Annette would have been another worthy winner for American Beauty imo, but only if Hilary Swank werent in the mix.

Er, why hasn’t Casablanca come up yet? In fact Ingrid Bergman was passed over in favour of her perf in For Whom the Bell Tolls, which I haven’t seen – can anyone tell me if they think that really was a better performance?

Some Like It Hot, with Lemmon and Monroe winning.

And finally, a film which didn’t get nominations for any of the 5 categories – Vertigo. Yep, even for Kim Novak.

I was rooting for Clint too!  I remember thinking he had a shot when he was nominated.  It was strange he was overlooked until the Oscar nominations.

I do think the three that won them deserved the top 5 honors.

In addition, I feel the following deserved them.

A Streetcar Named Desire could’ve easily won Picture and Director.

Some Like It Hot deserved Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress (Monroe), and Actor (Lemmon)…and I’d even go as far to say Joe E Brown in Supporting

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? definitely deserved to be in this group…and to be honest, while Supporting Actor is really a tossup, George Segal could’ve won Supporting and made it a clean sweep of all the acting awards.

NETWORK should’ve easily done this as well, especially with Scorsese out of the running for Director.

American Beauty could’ve been worthy but I supported Swank’s win and I think even Spacey could’ve been beat.

Agreed with the mentions of Network. It was better than Rocky, and Lumet deserved to win. Such a great film.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet, but I think Gentleman’s Agreement warranted it. Admittedly, I haven’t seen the winners of actor or actress(Never heard anyone talk about them either) and I think it’s screenplay was better than Miracle on 34th street.

Bergman’s great in For Whom the Bell Tolls – but she’s always great. Her performance in Casablanca is better. I’d agree, that’s the most obvious one that comes to mind.

Streetcar, Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?, and Network would  have been great choices!
