Very often there are major films that go on to win Academy Awards in major categories – they are usually dramas.

However, I very often see movies that are labelled as “drama” but actually find myself laughing incredibly hard or finding the films much funnier than I thought. Other times I find comedy films being dramatic and not really funny at all.

I decided to create a thread to try and see which major “drama” films are actually dark comedies, and which comedy films are actually more on the drama side.

Here is my list (please give your opinions as to where they belong)

    Argo – Dark Comedy?
No Country for Old Men – Dark Comedy?

ARGO definitely surprised me in the fact that it had a lot of humor while still having the dark, grim feel that seems to have covered that era of American history.

I can’t speak for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN as I have only seen it once (back when it came out) and I didn’t care for it too much….though I do vaguely remember chuckling and the (surprisingly full) laughing at a few things, but with ARGO it was way more apparent.

There is comedy on No Country For Old Men? I don’t remember laughing or even hearing anything resembling a joke once. NCFOM is a western drama.

    “they are usually dramas.”
    Yes no s_it.
Argo a comedy? You betcha. Funny as hell, and not with the usual suspects. Ben’s bangs are like pratfalls, for example. And so on.
No Country a comedy? Again, the hair. But, it aint funny imo.

Btw I LOVE “muddled”genres. Often means the writers and directors threw away their “how-to” manuals. I’ll take “muddled”any day.
