Perhaps one of the five greatest living directors, and the best known of the Japanese “New Wave” directors, Nagisa Oshima died today at 80 of pneumonia.

Best known in the US for the explicit In the Realm of the Senses and the David Bowie-starring World War II drama Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, he earlier gained international attention, including limited release in the US, for such 1960s greats as Cruel Story of Youth, Diary of a Shinjuku Thief, Boy and Death by Hanging.

His final film was Taboo (2000).
