    Variety reports.

    REX SHUTTERSTOCK
    MARCH 18, 2016 | 11:30AM PT

Naomi Watts and Jessica Lange will star in the independent drama “The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll” with Gia Coppola directing.

Indigenous Media, formed by Jon Avnet, Rodrigo Garcia and Jake Avnet will produce along Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”) and Untitled Entertainment partner Jason Weinberg (“Ray Donovan”).
Coppola, who wrote and directed James Franco’s “Palo Alto,” will direct from a script by Merritt Johnson, whose credits include “Temple Grandin” and “In Treatment.”

“The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll” is the story of Dare Wright, who became well-known in the 1950s thanks to her best-selling children’s book “The Lonely Doll.” Journalist Jean Nathan found Wright living in a public hospital in Queens four decades later, and her book pieces together Wright’s bizarre life of glamour and isolation, and her struggle to escape her painful childhood through her art. Wright passed away in 2001 at the age of 86.

“Rodrigo and I have been fans of and have worked with Merritt, Jessica and Naomi before,” said Jon Avnet. “Jean Nathan’s unique piece is a great vehicle for a reunion and chance for Gia Coppola to make a very distinctive film.”

Wright’s relationship with her mother, Edith or “Edie” was both strange and enigmatic. Edie managed to be both totally neglectful and terribly controlling of her daughter, fashioning her into a kind of compliant Mini-Me or “handmaiden,” dressing her in fancy outfits and refusing her any contemporary playmates. A despairing Dare developed an unhealthy obsession with the mirror and, eventually, a more fruitful one with the camera. Mother tried to co-opt that one too, snapping nude shots of her fully grown daughter as they sunbathed, vacationing on a primitive island off North Carolina. They also liked to share a bed, spooning together well into adulthood. As they say in Bonnie Fuller’s Star Magazine: “Not Normal!”

Jon Avnet’s credits include “Black Swan” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.”

Garcia’s credits include “Albert Nobbs” and “In Treatment.”

Cohen produced “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Milk.”

Lange’s next film is “Wild Oats.”  She currently has a recurring supporting role on Louis C.K.’s critically acclaimed web-series, “Horace and Pete”.  She will be starring on Broadway in “Long Day’s Journey into Night,” opening in April, and will also appear opposite Shirley MacLaine in the comedy “Wild Oats”, to be released by The Weinstein Company later this year.

Watts is currently starring in “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” and will soon be seen with Jake Gyllenhaal in “Demolition.”

The story is heartbreaking and bizarre.  I’m excited to see how Coppola handles such outrageous material.

Lange will get a nom and maybe even a win.  Same can be said for Watts, actually.

Wow! Really excited for this! The way Coppola directs this will be intriguing, and Watts/Lange is a headline lead casting that can’t go wrong.

What’s interesting about this is that it’s been in the works with Watts and Lange attached since 2005 – for over a decade!  Julian Schnabel made the casting choices and was originally set to direct.

Here are some photographs of Dare and her mother Edith:

These are going to be such amazing roles for both Watts and Lange. God, I can’t wait for this to start production.

Lange will not settle for supporting placement category fraud. If the Academy intends to award her a 3rd Oscar it will be in Best Actress where they double up for three timers: Bergman, Nicholson, and Streep.

But this is totally Dare’s story. I totally see Watts getting in in Lead and Lange in Supporting. I cannot wait for this.

Presumably, this will begin shooting in early summer to late fall, after Lange’s Broadway run.

What a year she’s having and her resurrection continues after AHS: “Horace and Pete” (possible Emmy win), “Long Day’s Journey into Night” (Tony win for sure), “Wild Oats” (possible Oscar nod) and now this (potential Oscar win).

Lange has the privilege to campaign a co-lead/supporting role as lead based on legacy alone.

    @HoraceandPete

For the daughter role do you envision anyone else being a better fit for Lange? I can’t help but prefer Chastain in the role.

This would’ve been insanely good casting.

Wow. Not only was Dare Wright both accomplished and tragic, so was her mama, Edith Stevenson Wright, a “World-acclaimed portrait artist, whose subjects included Winston Churchill, Calvin Coolidge, Greta Garbo, and daughter, Dare Wright.” (!!!)

I’m dying for this. One can argue that this Edie was infinitely more interesting and accomplished than “Big Edie”. At the very least, they’re equals in terms of reigning over the “eccentric mother” archetype.

She has a Facebook fanpage that is totally worth perusing just to see how talented this woman was: https://www.facebook.com/Edith-Steve…?tab=page_info

Lange has quite a role.  One I think will be even bigger than “Big Edie”.
