I know, I know. Remakes are usually awful and we’re talking about a masterpiece here. One of my all-time favorite films with three central performances that are absolutely phenomenal. There is no one that can replace Finch, Dunaway, Holden, Duvall and Straight in their outstanding work but still…

If a Network remake was in the works who would you like to see as the director, the writer(s) (besides Aaron Sorkin since he would be the obvious choice) and THE CAST?

    Amy Adams as Diana
Viola Davis as Louise (we’ve seen in Doubt what she can do with a very short, yet powerful scene)

I always thought Paul Thomas Anderson should remake this, as he loves this film and he would do it great justice

    • Howard Beale…Geoffrey Rush (this role should not go to a big star – a well-known and calm actor would give maximum intensity to the role)
    • Diana Christensen…Amy Adams OR Tilda Swinton (it depends where the film is going with Diana – I personally prefer the acidic and cynical nastiness Faye Dunaway brought to the role, so my choice would be Tilda Swinton, who is such a great actress and would be perfectly clinical and cold. However, if they want to go for a beautiful woman who got to the top of the corporate ladder through cheating and evil, while using her looks to help her, Adams is the way to go)
    • Max Schumacher…John Lithgow (this man needs another great film. He is very talented, and this type of role would be perfect for him. A man at the end of his rope, and who can no longer take it, but he has to remain optimistic)
    • Frank Hackett…Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ is a great actor, and he has played the slimy but charismatic man in power before. It would give him a chance to abandon the Iron Man/Sherlock Holmes trope and do something more baity, and win an award or two)
    • Louis Schumacher…Frances McDormand (a great veteran actress who is amazingly intense, and can easily play the quiet housewife who explodes in front of her husband)
    • Arthur Jensen…John Malkovich (this role would have been tailor-made for Philip Seymour Hoffman – a short and impactful role that he would have brought great insensitity and brilliance to, and he would have easily done this for his best friend PTA if he asked)

Geoffrey Rush and Amy Adams are just perfectly spot-on casting choices.

    Geoffrey Rush and Jessica Chastain

and for Louise i’m torn between Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand.  I’ll go with Tilda Swinton.

Love the mention above for Rush and Swinton, great actors both of them.  Swinton has exactly the right persona for this and could pull it off; some of the others listed could not.  I think if Meryl were cast in the Diana role, Faye would have a coronary.

Well guys, since there isn’t an Official Faye Dunaway Thread, I thought I may just add here, that Faye Dunaway recently tweeted a photo, of her working out, in the gym w/her trainer.  The caption read, “Getting in shape for my new film project!”  I must say, i’m intrigued by this new project!  Will update soon…and as Morgan Henard stated, I’m SURE it won’t be with HBO!!!

Your cast is very different to the general consensus, and while some of them are inspired (Sarsgaard and Lupita for example), the rest don’t really fit in. Amy Adams is a good choice for Diana, but Rebecca Hall and Reese Witherspoon don’t have the venom to play the role. Max and Howard need to be men who are growing old and are veterans of the news industry, and are just sick and tired of everything, especially Howard – Ruffalo is much too young, and we saw what happened when he tried to give a bold performance – a good, but flawed performance in The Normal Heart. But your choices are very interesting nonetheless

I hope Paul Thomas Anderson doesn’t remake it per se, but do something in the same vein – Network is his favorite film, and there are rumors that his next film after Inherent Vice will be a news channel satire (like Robert Downey Sr.’s work)
